Y., to Sgt. Robert B. Gif ford, son of Mr, and Mrs. J. B. Gif ford of Sauthern Pines and Thousand Island Park. The wedding will take place this fall. Miss Conley ia the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Conley and is a graduate of Middlebury College, Vt., and active in Sherrill. N. Y., Theatre Guild produrtions. Sgt. IN ARMY CIRCLES (ivlc t'lub .\ettvitle* The annual meeting of the South ern Pines Civic Club is scheduled for Friday, November 14, at 3 o’clock, it was announced this week by Miss Florence Campbell, president. Lt. Col. and Mrs. F. J. Cunningham and daughter, Ruth Alice, left Thursday for a trip to West Orange, N. J.. to spend 10 days visiting rela tives. The regular meeting of the Army Wives which was scheduled for Wed nesday at the Southern Pines Coun try Club was postponed for two weeks because of the absence of so many mpmbers during maneuvers. Word has been received that Lieut. Max Carter, who was stationed in Southern Pines until September, when he left for Fort Sill, Okla., has been ordered to duty in the Phillipines. Mrs. Willard W. Other guests were Mrs. Scott, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Charles W. Picquet, Mrs. Evan Morgan, Mrs. Schoolcraft and Mrs. James Milliken. Mrs. School craft and Mrs. Dorr won prizes at their respective tables. Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Scott complimented Mrs. Cribb Wednesday at a dessert bridge. J., who spent the summer In Vermont, entertained Mr. and Mrs. Harry W. Gage at dinner Tuesday night. ’The occasion celebrated the fifth wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Miller. Of prime importance was the re turn this week of Major Martin’s mo ther, Mrs. M. M. Martin from her native Belfast, Ireland, where she went three years ago for a “brief” visit with her brother and where she has been stranded since, because of the war. This week-end Major Haskell Cleaves of the Signal Corps, now on maneu vers, v.ill visit the Martins, seeing them again for the first time since 10 years ago when he and Major Mar tin were stationed together in Pan ama. Mrs. Martin—the mother—landed In Montreal, Canada, last ’Tuesday, October 28, af|er having obtained pasage across on a troop transport ship. At one time Mrs. Martin thought she had obtained passage on a regu lar ship but a last minute cancel lation prevented her sailing. The ship was the ill-fated Athenla.
