Local Course to Be Scene of Scotch Tourney Sunday TRADITIONAL CROCHET DESIGN For a Charming Modern Luncheon Set Circle No. Ill of the Carthage Presbyterian Church met on Monday evening with Mrs. Dan Carter host ess at her home on Pinehurst Drive. Miss Eula Blue conducted the Bible Study and Miss Hilda Blue conducted the program for the evening. The hostess, assisted by Mrs. M, G. Boy ette, and Miss Margaret Neal Carter, served hot coffee and fruit cake. After refreshments, a miscellaneous shower was presented to Mrs. Mc Leod, a recent bride, who was former ly Mrs. Edith Harriss. Mrs and Mr.. Lucian P. Tyson and daughters. Misses Ruth and Jane Ty son spent Sunday in Fayetteville vis- iting Miss Cuma Harriss. Mrs. Tyson will spend several days. Mr. and Mrs. Lester Shields, Mrs. R. S. Shields and Mrs. Wilburn Shields spent Monday in Raleigh visiting the Rev. and Mrs. Frank S. Blue. Mrs. Laverne Womack will return ^. to Kannapolis Monday to resume her ' Work in the Kannapolis City Schools This is just one of the tricky water holes on the Southern Pitres Golf Course, which will be put to heavy use this Sunday, January 11, when about 10 foursomes, made up of the Gentlemen Golfers of the Sandpipers and the Lady Golfers of the Pine Dodgers, set out on their mid-season Scotch tournament. Arthur Atherton heads the Sandpipers and Mrs. H. B. Greenman the Pine Dodgers. Idea of the Scotch tournament is for the lady of the pair to take every other shot, usually playing the best ball of the drive. Roy Grlnnell, golf professional, expects about 40 in the tournament. WHEN MUST RETURNS BE FIL ED? For the calendar year 1941, on or before March 16, 1942. For the fiscal year, on or before the 15th day of the third month following the close of the fiscal year. WHERE AND WITH WHOM MUST INCOME TAX RETURNS BE FILED ? In the internal revenue dis trict in which the person lives or has his chief place of business, and with the collector of internal revenue. HOW DOES ONE MAKE OUT HIS INCOME TAX RETURN ? By follow ing the detailed instructions given on the income tax blanks. Form 1040 and Form 1040A (optional simplifiod form). WHAT IS THE TAX RATE? A normal tax of 4 percent on the amount of the net income in excess of the al lowable credits against net income (personal exemption, credits for de pendents, interest on obligations of the United States and its instrumen talities and earned income credit) in the computation of the normal tax net income; and a graduated surtax or the amount of net income in ex cess of the allowaole credits < personal exemption and credit for dependents! against net income in the computa tion of the surtax net income. Black; and Sandhills: | nieeting. Two new members for every present one was set as the goal of the Moore County Hospital Auxiliary for 1942 at its first meeting of the year held Wednesday. Mrs. Alice Burt Hunt of Southern Pines .assumed the chairmanship of the organization for the year at this meeting and the Auxiliary decided that it would make direct appeals for funds for its work this year, rather than to use a schedule of entertain ments. The work of the Hospital is even more important during wartime than in peace, it was pointed out. and this will be particularly stressed by the Auxiliary. C'ommlttee Heads Mrs. Hunt announced the follow ing appointments of committee chair men: Supply, Mrs. Charles E. Crowell Jr.; equipment, Mrs. Preston T. Kel sey; social service, Mrs. Stnithers Burt; motor corps, Mrs. N. S. Hurd; membership. Miss Luura Kelsey; flow ers, Mrs. H. Foster Kelly. Mrs. James H. Andrews will again head the inde pendent inspection committee and a finance chairman is to be appointed la ter. Funeral services for William Lam bert, 79, of Hemp, who died in Moore County Hospital Tuesday morning were held at Smyrna Church several miles above Hemp Wednesday after noon. Mr. Lambert, who had spent his en tire life in Moore County, was tiie son of Mr. and Mrs Daniel Lambert. Sheean to Lecture at Flora Macdonald Vincent Sheean, author and veteran foreign correspondent, will lecture at Flora Macdonald College in Red Springs Saturday evening, January 10 at 8 o’clock, as the fourth feature In the winter's concert and lecture se ries. Mr. Sheean, who returned to the tJnited States from a trip throughout the Far East and South Pacific on the eve of the recent Japanese attack on this country, will give his interpre tation of the world crisis, based upon perBonal obserration. During the past 13 years of history-making events in Europe, Mr. Sheean has been right on the scene. Mrs. John J. Farrey Dies at Miami Beach Former Resident of Southern Pines Passes; Mr. Farrey Was Town Plumber Here Word was received here this week of the death of Mrs. John J. Farrey, formerly of Southern Pines, at her residence at Di Lido island, Miami Beach, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. Farrey lived here un til about 18 years ago when they mov ed to Florida. Mr. Farrey was city ’jlumber here, and is now chief build ing inspector of Miami Beach. Mrs. Farrey died Monday and fun eral mass was held at St. Patrick’s church of which she was a member. Surviving her are Mr. Farrey. one daughter, Mrs. N. A. Tierney of New Haven, Conn.; three sons, Loyola, W. Vincent and Francis X., all of Miami Beach, and one sister, Mrs. Lillian M. Cox of Zephyrhills. College Glee Club Directors Visiting Marshall Bartholomew, director of the Yale Glee Club, and Merrill Knapp, director of the Princeton Glee Club, are visiting at the home of James Boyd. They were sent here by Brigadier General Frederick Osborn, chief of the morale section of the Army’s general staff, to organize singing and have been put in charge of the singing of the Ninth Division at Fort Bragg. Mr. Bartholomew, who had charge of relief work in a group of German and Austrian prison camps in Siberia during the last war and later organiz ed the singing at many American camps, is well known here, having brought the Yale Glee Club to this section four times in the past 20 years.
