CLOSED SUNDAYS Early reports on the 1945 Christmas Seal Sale indicate a lag in returns, in spite of the fact that during these immediate postwar years the American pub lic should be strengthening its guard against tuberculosis. Frank W. Webster, executive secretary of the North Carolina Tuberculosis Association, points out that past wars have been fol lowed consistertly by increases in tuberculosis. There has been a sharp increase in tuberculosis al ready in Europe and Asia, where this longi-term disease has had a number of years to make its de struction known. The state and community goals in the 1945 Seal Sale should and must be met, Webster said, in or der that the voluntary organiza tions may continue and even aug ment their programs of health ed ucation and case-finding in bringing in check the greatest killer of youth in our nation. The appeal for funds to fight tubercu losis is made only once each year, Webster continued, but the importance of the Seal Sale as a means of controlling tuberculosis through education cannot be .min imized. The state’s Christmas Seal Sale goal is $285,000. I Aberdeen Club To Give Hne Christmas Program A program of Christmas mus ic was presented by the Aber deen Music Club under the direc tion of Mrs. A. Robert Harrison at 5.30 Sunday, December 16th, in the Methodist Church, Aberdeen. Assisting were members of the Sandhills Book Club who dramatized several of the numbers. The Jernigans have re ceived word from Marine Corpor al Donald Deeds of Clifton Forge, Virginia, handler and battle com panion of the bold warrior, that both man and dog have landed and are well. Corporal Deeds writes that he owes much, his life, perhaps, to the intelligence and wariness which Discount displayed in ac tion on Okinawa and Pa liliu; and has requested that the K-9 be given to him. The Jernigans state that transfer of the dog’s owner ship is being arranged, and that Discount will join his companion in arms as a Christmas present.
