Postal Receipts Take Postwar Dip After a military high tide, gross receipts at the' Southern ■Pines post office are ebbing, and, though far above what in pre war days was considered “nor mal,” the close of the fiscal year June 30 showed them nearer there than they had been the year before. Receipts for the fiscal year 1946-47 were $35,519.13, it was an nounced by Acting Postmaster L. T. Hall. Those for the fiscal year 1945-46 were $38,859.49. However, it is not fiscal, but calendar year receipts which de termined post office’s rating, and the local, post office, just squeak ing past the $40,000 minimum, maintained its first class classi fication for the fiscal year on the basis of receipts for the calendar year 1946 of $40,239.86. The drop in receipts from those of the calendar year 1945, while stopping short of the minimum, did, however, lop $100 per year from the postmaster’s annual wage. Beginning July 1, the post master, acting or otherwise, gets $4,000 instead of $4,100 per year. Biggest factor in the drop in total receipts was the closing of the substation at Camp Mackall, which had been responsible for upping the local take far beyond the pre-war level. And, military mail or no military mail, this is a growing town, and it’s doubt ful that they will ever be as low again.as back in'the “good” old days. * , Domestic Woes Aired Iri Court In monkeys and apes the num ber of pairs of ribs varies from 11 in some species to 15 in others. Witii both eyes blacked and bruises plentiful on her face, Mrs. Bass' told her tale of mal treatment at her husband’s hands, while his testimony was of self-defense. Three Southern Pines Negroes received jail sentences of 60 days, suspe^nded on payment of $25 fine and oiie-third .each of the costs of their trial on varying charges of disturbance of the public peace. The cost of around $20 will in clude the trip, tickets to thp pag eant, meals and overnight ac commodations for the two-day trip., The project is inspired by the success of one undertaken earlier this year, when a group of club members went to Orton gardens to see the azaleas. Anyone want ing to go on the August trip should qotify Miss Flora Mc- cfbnald, home dfemonstr^tion agent, at her office in the Car thage courthouse. Fire Stairs To Make Robbins School Safer Another step toward making county schools fire-safe is being taken at Robbins, where two “Brockwell towers” are being added to the Robbins graded school, this week said Supt. of Schools H. Lee Thomas. “Brockwell towers” are fire proof stairways, maspnry-enclos- ed with steel doors, affording safe exits in case of fire. Their cost is approximately $5,000 each. One is being incorporated in the end of each wing of the Rob bins school on recommendation of Sherwood Brockwell, state fire commissioner, following a recent inspection. “Brockwell towers,’* a nick- name.given by schoolmen to these stairs of the fire commissioner’s design, must now by law be in cluded in every school building more than one story high;.. The Robbins school was built before the law was passed. NEW DENTIST Dr. Tracy E. Hussey, of Rob bins, was one of 55 dentists li censed Monday by the North Car olina board of d^tal examiners meeting at Raleigh Monday.
