Dies At Clinton
Lauchlin Alexander Bethune,
who was born in Aberdeen 85
years ago and rose to prominence
in the business and political life
of the state, died last Friday night
in Clinton, after a heart attack.
Funeral services were held Sun
day at Graves Memorial Presbyte
rian church, Clinton.
Mr. Bethune was a member of
Old Bethesda Presbyterian church
at Aberdeen, until he moved to
Clinton in 1896 to found, The'*
Sampson Independent, a militant
newspaper. Subsequently, he
founded an insurance and real
estate business, as well as a cotton
brokerage firm. He was president
of the Bank of Clinton for 30
years.
He had been State Senator from
the Ninth district and had held a
number of high state and coimty
offices. His wife was the former
Rena Stewart. Their four sons
and a brother and sister of Mr.
Bethune survive, none of whom
live in this area.

Funeral services for Mrs. Belle
Boggs, 85, of Vass, who died 'Tues
day of last week in Moore Count-
ty hospital after a long period of
declining health, were conducted
Thursday afternoon at Cypress
Presbyterian church by the pas
tor, the Rev. A. D. Carswell, as
sisted by the Rev. L. B. McKeith-
en, Jr., of Fayetteville.
Mrs. Boggs was third oldest of
the family of 10 children of the
late Annie Black and Daniel Mc
Gill. Her mother, before mar
riage, cEime over from the Isle of
Jura, Scotland, and her father
was from the Isle of Skye.
She was married to Preston
Boggs, who died in 1929 while
making his home in Cameron. Af-

Ed, of Vass, and Sam of Texas;
one daughter, Mrs. Bud McDonald
of Cameron; two brothers. Arch
and Hughie McGill, and one sis
ter, Miss Flora McCiU, aU of
Vass Route 2; 23 grandchildren
and 17 great-grandchildren.
