Page FOURTEEN THE PILOT—Southern Pines, North Carolina THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 1959 Newjs and Personals from Vass Bmsm Cameron Smith, ReprefenlaliTe — Telephone Vass 217i (Bride-Elect Honored Miss Polly Gilmore, whose wedding to George Laubscher is set for September 6, was honored at a miscellaneous shower at the community house Saturday night by Mrs. Wilford Lassiter of Vass and Mrs. Kenneth Hinsley of Aberdeen. Summer flowers were effectively placed. The group of 27 guests played bingo and engaged in a kitchen contest, which was won by Mrs. Eugene Hicks. Sandwiches in the shape of wedding bells and hearts, punch and other party refreshments were served from a table overlaid with a white cloth and centered with a floral arrangement. The honoree received many nice gifts for her future home. Out of town guests included the honoree’s sister, Mrs- Edgar Klingenschmidt, of Manly; her (sister-in-law, Mrs. Jimmie Lee Gilmore, of Route 1, Cameron/; Mrs. Don Smith of Manly and Mrs. Grace Sides, Mrs. Evelyn Morgan and Mrs. Ruth Wilker- son, of Aberdeen. Presbyterian Circles Both Circles of the Vass Pres byterian Women of the Church met last week, with programs on “Evangelism” and Bible studies on “The Life of Subordination.” Each meeting ended with a fel lowship period during which re freshments were served. Mrs. Delmas Kimball was |ios- tess to the Jane McGill Circle at the church. She also led the program and Bible study. Mrs. Howard Gschwind was hostess to Circle 1 at her home- Mrs. Paul Dean Cameron led the Bible study and program, assist ed by Miss Polly Gilmore. Mississippi Guests On their return from Washing ton, D. C., where they attended the National Rural Letter Car riers Association convention, Mr. and Mrs. Max Jordan and daugh ter, Marcella, of Ocean Springs, Miss., spent Sunday and Sunday night in the home of Mrs. Jor dan’s uncle, J. W. Smith, and family on Route 2. This was Mrs. Jordan’s first visit since she was a small child and she now has two children, a son who was in college last year, and Marcella, 13 years old- Mrs. Jordan is the daughter of Mrs. Archie Smith of Picayune, Miss., and the late Mr. Smith. A number of relatives called to see the Jordan family Sunday af ternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Marshall Thompson of College Park, Md., were there for dinner, and after noon visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Alex McGill and daughter, Peggy, of Maxton, Mrs. J. M- Norton of Raeford, Mr. and Mrs. N. A. McGill and sons, Richard and Robert, of Aberdeen, Mrs. N. N. McLean, Mrs. Charles Von Metzger, Miss Agnes Smith and Mrs. S. R- Smith of Veiss, and Sgt. and Mrs. Julian Smith and son, Johnny, of Route 2. MYF Meeting The Methodist Youth Fellow ship held its monthly evening meeting Sunday in the fellowship haU. Sophia Oldham led the de votions. Ann Edwards, who spent last week at Duke University at tending the annual MYF confer ence, gave a comprehensive re port of the conference, reviewing the goals of the various program areas and giving much helpful information. New MYF officers to be in stalled next month are: Dana Thomas, president; Lynne Old ham, vice president; Jeanette Mullinix, secretary-treasurer (re elected); JoAnn Brewer, Bonnie Callahan, A1 Edwards, Danny Williams and Ann Edwards, pro gram area chairmen. Eightieth Birthday Neill McMillan had a happy 80th birthday Tuesday with his family present for a supper com plete with decorated birthday cake, that night. With him were his two daughters and their fam ilies: Mr. and Mrs. Charles Von Metzger, Sara and Sandra, of the home, and Mrs. Norris Burleson and children, Bonnie and Bobby, of Newark, Ohio, who arrived Tuesday afternoon. The only ab sent members were Dr. Burleson and Eric Von Metzger. Eric, who is in the Army, stationed at Fort Knox, Ky-, was at home from Friday until Sunday. j Mr. McMillan is hale and heEir- ty and an ardent, successful gard ener. Each year he grows many more vegetables than are requir ed lor the family, an^ derives great pleasure from distributing them among his neighbors. Mrs. Burleson' and children will be at home for about a week. Personals Henry Callahan underwent minor surgery at Moore Memor ial Hospital last Thumday and was a patient there until Monday. His sister, Bonnie, is making fine progress following her recent ill- rfess. Mrs. J. A. Hudson and children, who had been here lor several weeks, returned to their home in Portsmouth, Va., last Sunday- Mrs. R. A. Edwards went with /her, to stay until the middle of this week. Miss Bessie Cameron and Mrs. W. H. Keith visited their sister, Mrs. R. D. Braddy, at Rockfish Tuesday. Mr- and Mrs. D. P. Stewart were Sunday dinner guests of >Ir. and Mrs. Lloyd Stewart, their son and daughter-in-law, in Sou thern Pines. Mr. and Mrs. Arch Cameron of Overhills and Miss Irene Cameron of Cameron visited Mrs. Daniel Boggs and family, Sunday. Charles Ray Pope was in Char lotte from Friday through Mon day, with the National Guard. Johnny McDermott of Char lotte visited his grandparents,'Mr. and Mrs. G. M. McDermott, and his aunt, Mrs- A. G. Edwards, Jr., and lEimily last week. Mrs. Edward McNair and Mrs. R. G. Rosser spent Saturday in Charlotte and Mrs. Rosser’s grand daughter, Ann Rosser, came home with her to spend a few days. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Spicer (Janet Rosser) and sons, Christopher and Guy, of Haddonfield, N; J., arrived Monday to visit Mrs. Rosser- Mr. and Mrs. Ben H. Wood, their daughter, Mrs. Howard Gschwind, and Mike Gschwind left Thursday on a vacation trip. They planned to visit relatives in Newton, to go to Cherokee to attend “Unto These Hills,” and from there to go to Clarksville, Tenn., to see the Woods’ son Philip and his family. Mrs. Ed Phillips spent last weekend with relatives on Route 1, Cameron. Miss Barbara Gillis of Mount Olive has been visiting her aunt, Mrs. S. R. Smith- S|Sgt. and Mrs. W. R. McGill and children of Sumter, S. C., visited Mrs. Hilda Parker and Mr. and Mrs. D- H. McGill Sun day and Monday. Lt. Col. and Mrs. P. B. Irby, Jr., and children, Susan, Chip and John, of Arlington, Va., were at the home of Mrs. Irby’s parents, Mr. and Mrs- A. M. Cameron, from Thursday night until Sun day, Mrs. Irby coming to see her father, who is a patient at St. Joseph’s Hospital. He is report ed to be slightly better.
