May St., the night of June 9. Nobody saw an automobile hit Smith and throw him ne^ly 85 feet from the point of impact. Fragments of a broken headlight lens, picked up from the pave ment, and the clothing worn by the victim were about all officers had to work with in starting an investigation. Police Chief Earl S. Seawell immediately alerted the State Highway Patrol and area pphce to watch for an auto with dam aged right front and a broken headlight. Garages and repair shops were also asked to be on the lookout. Many private cars belonging to National Guardsmen on maneuvers a few miles from Southern Pines, on the Fort reservation, were examined with cooperation of National Guard of ficers. When the headlight fragments were swept up and pieced togeth er by police, identification of the lens as a Tung^Sol 6006 sealed beam was made possible by a marking on the glass. This meant that the automobile on which it had been used had a six-volt elec trical system. Chief Seawell then determined that the following makes and years of car and all prior year models of those makes used six- volt systems: Olds, 1952; Cadillac, 1952; Buick, 1952; Pontiac, 1954; Chevrolet, 1954; Mercury, 1955; Lincoln, 1955; Ford, 1955 all Chrysler products, 1955; and Nash and Rambler, 1955. A minneo- graphed letter listing these mod els, with background information about the accident was widely cir culated to garages, auto supply stores and so forth, with request that information be sent to the Southern Pines police department on autos with right headlamps out or on persons purchasing, six- volt headlamps. A number of leads were follow ed up without producing infor mation that could be linked to the death of Smith. Another avenue of investiga tion was followed when Smith’s clothing was sent to the Washington, D. C., laboratories of the Federal Bureau of Investiga tion, with a request that the clothing be examined for evidence of pajnt, grease or other sub stance, that the origin of the sub stance be identified if possible and that blood on the clothing be typed for information that might be useful in the future. Chief Seawell requested that the FBI information be returned to the State Bureau of Investiga tion at Raleigh, as SBI coopera tion is being given in investiga tion of the hit-run death. The FBI reports have not yet come back, Qhief Seawell said. “This case will stay open,” the chief emphasized. “We want peo ple to know that we don’t quit working on a case like this, no matter how unlikely it seems we can find the car and the man re sponsible for Smith’s death.” Model FPD-13B.62 1333 cii. ft net capacky e Exclusive Frigidaire Frost-Proof system stops freezer frost before It forms, e Huge bottom Freezer stores 152 pounds in zero zone cold.
