Mr. Watson is a Connecticut Mutual agent in the Southern Pines area. PILOT ADVERTISING PAYS Parker Oil Company Southern Pines nl5tf Joe Kimball, manager for Unit ed Telephone Company of the Carolinas, Inc., explained this week that the use of telephone directory covers containing adver tising is contrary to a recent federal district court ruling. He cited an injunction issued by a federal district court in North Carolina against a distri butor of the covers. The injunction prohibited Tel- phone Service Company, a Florida corporation, from continuing to send the covers to subscribers of Citizens Telephone Company, Bre vard. In part the injunction states, a telephone directory is such as integral part of telephone service that the telephone company and the public have a proper and re medial interest in controlling its use.” “The court’s decision is signifi cant in that it upholds and gives legal basis to the position long maintained by our company,” the telephone manager said. The company, he emphasized, has op posed the covers because they obscure instructions printed on the cover of the directory itself and detract from the effectiveness MORTGAGE LOANS AVAILABLE Unlimited Funds To Loan On Con ventional 6% Basis Up To 25 Years. The tariff under which United Telephone Company operates stat es, no binder, holder, insert, auxil iary cover or attachment of any kind not furnished by the tele phone company shall be attached to or used with the directories owned by the telephone company. This information appears in each of the company’s telephone direc tories. The federal court ruled that this prohibition is part of every contract between the company and its subscribers and that use of the covers is a violation of the contract. Proving Age For Social Security Often Difficult Many people in Moore County have difficulty in getting their social security check started be cause they cannot prove that they have reached retirement age, reports Thomas S. McDonald, So cial Security representative for Moore County, because most births were not recorded in Moore County until 1920. A birth certificate recorded at birth is the best proof of age available but since most people now reaching retirement age will not have this document, the So cial Security Administration will accept other proofs. The following is a list of some proofs which are acceptable to the Social Security Administra tion. ’They are in order of prefer ence, and the older a document is, the more acceptable it is: Birth certificate (recorded soon after birth,) baptismal certificate, signed statement by physician who was in attendance at birth, military record, passport, school record, insurance policy which shows age or date of birth, mar riage record showing age or date of birth, age of parent on child’s birth certhicate, census record, statement of other person. If you are nearing retirement age it will speed up your social security checks if, before you file your claim, you get one or more of the above proofs and bring them with you to the Social Security office. The North Carolina textile in dustry and its employees pay more than $44,000,000 annually in corporate and individual in come taxes and in sales taxes. This is almost one-third of the state’s total collection from these three sources. The Gray fox Restaurant Pinehurst, N. C.
