Gar rison of Pinehurst, recently com pleted his first helicopter solo flight with Helicopter Training Squadron Eight, Ellyson Field, Pensacola, Fla. In preparation for qualification as a helicopter pilot he comple ted an extensive ground training course in rotary wing aircraft principles and will receive flight instruction in the Navy’s Bell and Sikorsky helicopter. Upon completion of his helicop ter training, he will be designated a Naval Aviator. Ens. Garrison is a graduate of the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md. CarlL'Ie T. Baslian, 21, whose wife, Donna, lives at 605 N. May St, was commissioned a second lieutenant upon graduation from the Infantry Officer Candidate School, Fort Benning, Ga., recent ly. During the training. Lieutenant Bastian was trained as a platoon leader and received instruction in the duties and responsibilities of a newly commissioned infantry officer. He entered the Army in March, 1960. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carlisle M. Bastian, live at Larch- mont, N. Y. Marine Private First Class Her bert O. Hassey, son of Mrs. Vir ginia P. Hassey of Route 1, Car thage is serving with the Second Marine Division’s Third Battalion, Sixth Regiment, at Camp Le- jeune. The regiment participates in continuous training maneuvers employing modern warfare tactics including helicopter vertical-as sault and anti-guerrilla warfare. Marine Corporal Wilbert H. Jenkins, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Jenkins of Route 1, Jackson Springs, is serving with Marine Battalion Landing Team 3i2, cur rently with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean. He recently participated in an amphibious, nine-day, live-firing exercise at Porto Scudo, Sardinia. During the exercise. Marine land ings were preceded by advance operations including anti-subma rine operations, air strikes, mine sweeping and reconnaissance. Upon completion of the exer cise, the landing team resumed its position as the amphibious strik ing force of the Sixth Fleet. CARTHAGE NEWS Dr. A. E. Underwood is a pa tient in Moore Memorial Hospital. Mrs. W. G. Caldwell is home from a visit to her daughter, Mrs. James Davis and Mr. Davis and children in Neese. S. C. Mrs. Ruby Spencer is home from Moore Memorial Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Larry Gravette of UNC, Chapel Hill, spent this weekend with her mother, Mrs. D. N. Carter. Mr. and Mrs. M. G. Boyette, Jr. and son, M. G. Boyette, HI of Chapel Hill, spent this weekend with their parents, Solicitor and Mrs. M. G. Boyette nad Mr. and Mrs. W. H. McGee. Mrs. Joseph Pirserno is home from Moore Memorial Hospital where she has been a patient for several days. Mrs. Gene Risher has retuned to her home in Atlanta after a 10 days visit with her father, D. A. McDonald. Bernard Dotson and four col lege friends from U.N.C. spent the weekend with his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. B. E. Dotson. Rudolph Womack is a patient in Moore Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Frank S. Blue is improv ing in Moore Memorial Hospital, where she has been a patient for two weeks. G.E.
