Page B xxi.xj X xxj\.ya.- A, ■ MOORE COUNTY SUPERIOR COURT Snipes Given 12-18 Years In Fatal Shooting Of John Henry McLaughlin Purvis Snipes, Negro of the Haw Branch community north of Highfalls, drew 12 to 18 years in prison in Moore County Superior Court at Carthage last week for the fatal shooting of John Henry McLaughlin on January 19. Pleading guilty to man slaughter, Snipes drew the heavi est sentence meted out by Judge Frank M. Armstrong of Troy dur ing the four-day term, Monday j through Thursday. j McLaughlin was hit by bullets ! during a brawl at The Shack, a ' Negro night club. Make Chalmers, proprietor of The Shack, was also injured, and hospitalized at Moore Memorial for one week. Ernest Franklin Ryals, Jr., charged by his legally separated wife with assault with intent to commit rape, pleaded guilty to assault on wife, which the State accepted. Charged also with dis turbing the peace and assault with deadly weapon on George Denning, he drew 13 to 24 months on these counts, then for assault ing his wife, 24 months more, sus pended for five years on strin gent good-behavior conditions. Leon Ransome, pleading guilty to robbery and assault with dead ly weapon, drew two to five years in prison, to begin on expiration of the six-months sentence he is now serving for assault on a fe male, handed him last October in Southern Pines municipal coiut. Robert Smith, convicted by a jury of assault with intent to kill, was handed a prison sentence of not less than 18 nor more than 24 months. Also in the jury trial, Beverly Ann Watson was found guilty of aiding and abetting in assault with intent to kill, and was hemd- ed 13 to 24 months in Women’s Division of State’s Prison. Dorothy Warren, convicted Local Native Has Large Ice Cream* Business In Pa. James D. Carter, a Southern Pines native who now operates a large ice cream and vending machine business in Pennsylvania, was expected here today with his wife and three children for a weekend visit. His mother, Mrs. Mary E. Carter Ward, lives at 560 N. May St. Mr. Carter, now 38 years old, was bom here and' attended local schools. Formerly a resident of Washington, D. C., he now lives at Verona, Pa., near Pittsburgh of I and owns the Goodie Bar Ice larceny by a jury, drew 18 to 36 months in Women’s Division, while Delores Clark, for the same offense, drew two to five years, suspended on five years’ proba tion. Delores was ordered to pay Cream Co. at Oakmont, Pa. Judging terms of the probation to have been wilfully violated by the conviction on assault with intent to commit rape in the Southern Pines court last November 17, Judge Armstrong ordered the sus pended sentence into effect. In two cases arising from an attack on Southern Pines police (and a State Highway Patrolman, William Clifford Garner drew 13 to 24 months on the roads, while Ken Sandy drew 30 days sus pended for one year on payment of $25 and costs for public drunkenness, vile and profane language, assault on officer and resisting arrest. Earlier actions of the term in cluded disposition of the follow ing cases: Maurice McKenzie, public drunk, 30 days suspended for one year on payment of $50 and costs and good behavior conditions; Lonnie Monroe, assault with in tent to commit rape, not less than than 13 nor more than 36 months, with recommendation that they be served at a first offenders’ camp. It was later brought out that Monroe was on five years’ violations, were contained in the judgment. William (Bill) H. Carlyle, charged with trespass, pleaded guilty to public drunkenness and drew a 30-day sentence. On another charge of public drunk enness, he pleaded not guilty but was convicted by a jury. He was sentenced to another 30- day term, to be served on ex piration of the first, and the court recommended for hini a Ithorough physical examination, with treatment for alcoholism and any other ailment which might be indicated by the exam ination.
