TOBACCO ONE OF “BIG 4’WORTS ‘'Tobacco has the distinction of be ing the first agricultural commodity to enter into the foreign trade of this country,” according to Dr. Julius Klein, Director of the Bureau of For eign and Domestic Commerce. “Since early colonial days when it was used as a medium of exchange and formed the basis of economic and social life of the settlers in Virginia, some of the most prominent characters in the history of the country have been en gaged in its exportation. Under a glass cover in the offices of the well known firm of W. D. and H. O. Wills Co., of Bristol, England, is a bill of sale showing a purchase of tobacco by that firm from George Washing ton. “Today,” continued Dr. Klein, “To bacco ranks as one of the Big Four of exports from the United States. American tobacco is exported to al most every country and the crop fur nishes more than one-third of the world’s supply. According to Direc tor Klein, its exportation is impor tant to most of the Southern states, but particularly to Kentucky, North Carolina and Virginia, which produce nearly 70 percent of the total crop of this country. For the five year period 1919 to 1923, the exports of leaf tobacco equaled 39 percent of the average annual production in the United States during the same pe riod. For the first nine months of 1924 the exports of leal tobacco amounted to $108,024,109. “In the beginning, of course, the colonies sent much of their product to England, and the United Kingdom continues to be the best customer for leaf tobacco, taking an average of about 40 percent of the exports from the United States. China now holds second place, taking about 9 percent of our exports. Many of the countries of Europe have established monopolies controlling the entire to bacco industry. Through the efforts of representaties of the Bureau of Foreign and Domestic Commerce con tracts have been effected between American firms and two of the Eur opean governments monopolies, re sulting in initial sales of tobacco which amounted to hundreds of thou sands of dollars and in the estab lishment of permanent connections which means profitable future bus iness for the American firms.” “While the exports of manufac tured tobacco are much less impres sive than those of leaf tobacco, still they amounted to $16,944,954 during the first nine months of 1924, and have been showing an appreciable increase during the past two years. In 1923 they were about eight times as great as the pre-war average. The most important export of finished to bacco is that of cigarettes, for which the Far East is our principal mar ket." “The consumption of tobacco is probably influenced as little as any commodity by the e conomic condi tions or prosperity of a people,” maintained Dr. Klein, “Tobacco is a commodity in which peoples all over the world indulge. Its producers and exporters in the United States reach out to Great Britain and the Euro pean countries on the east of them and to the Far East on the west of them, and girdle the globe with their sales.” "Pa,” inquired his strictly up-to- j the-minute offspring, playing with his ladio set, “what’s the wave-length for Santa Claus?"—Boston Trans cript.
