An act was passed til the last session of tho Legislature, dircctinir the JJoanl tor Internal Improvement to liave one or more of the largest marshes or swamps, situate be tween the Virginia line and Albe marle &ound, between the Koa noke River and Albemarle Sound, and the Tar River and Pamptico Sound, between the Roanoke and Tar Rivers, between the Tar and Ncuse Rivers, between the Neuse and Cape-Fear Rivers, between tlie Cape-Fear and Lumber Riv ers, and between Lumber River and the South-Carolina line. The object of these surveys, is to de termine which of the said marsh es it may be practicable to drain the probable cost of such draining the quality of land that by such draining will be reclaimed for cul tivation, and the quantity of va cant land. The Hoard is required to report to the Legislature upon this sub ject, and authority is given them to employ one or more compe tent Surveyors, to carry the re quirements of the act into execu tion. Under this authority, the Board have engaged the services of an Engineer from New-York, by the name of AVs, who brings the highest testimonials of his qua lifications from Governor Clinton, with whom Governor Ijiirton hail corresponded on the subject. Mr. N. arrived in this city, on Monday last, and will proceed immediate ly on his survey. Governor Bur ton has contracted to pay him at the rate of 82,000 per annum un til the meeting of the Legislature, when his salary can be fixed by law. Mr. Brazier set out last week to survey one of the Swamps near the South-Carolina line. So that we hope, in the course of the pre sent summer, the Board will be able, by the united exertions of these gentlemen, to obtain all the information on this subject, requi red by the act of the Legislature. Raleigh Register. A friend in Newborn informs us, that serious fears are enter tained in that place, that the Schooner Convoy, one of the re gular line of packets to New York, has been lost at sea. She sailed from the latter port more than two months since, and has not been heard of. ib. Cotton. The homo market now consumes at the rate of 175, 000 bales of Cotton per annum, or o about one-fourth of the average annual produce of the U. State's. lW STpe Stahc fr SPrinS 10.0. vve are requested to in form those interested in this im portant race, that one of the pre sent Subscribers is solicitous that the subscription shall be raised from $500 to S1000 eachand in order to ascertain whether this proposition will be agreeable to all who have entered, they are re spectively desired to signify their wishes to the Editor of this paper (Warrcnton Reporter) as soon as convenient. In expressing this wish, he says: "Let us have a Stake that shall be above any thing of the kind ever known in the United States, as it is believed that eight of the finest colts that ever were at any one time on a sweepstake list, are named, that the winner may be materially ben efitted by receiving 88000."" The name of the gentleman making this proposition shall be given, when the consent of the other Subscribers are obtained, in the Warrenton Reporter. As the Subscribers to the New Hope Sweepstake are. all men of character and great celebrity in the Sporting world as they can command the best colts, and as much money as they may please to venture on a race as so much has been done for New-York and Virginia, and is still doing at Long Island and Richmond we will express a hope and belief, that no inconsiderable inducement to sportsmen, for acceding to the foregoing proposition, "will be found, inasmuch as the race is to' be run at Halifax, which is the ve ry centre of that part of the State, ' most celebrated forits Racellor-j scs, and at this time most in need' of the countenance and support of tne iricnus ot the Turl. ing on Thursday night before the fifth Sabbath in July next, and continue till Monday following. We do hope that the Preachers of this State will take a deep in terest in this meeting; and feel it their duty to attend; and those who can visit us from neighboring States, are respectfully invited. By order of the meeting. Georgia. Colonel Duncan G. Campbell is a candidate for the office of Governor, in opposition to Mr. Forsyth. In the opinion of a gentleman just trom Georgia, the latter will be elected by an overwhelming majority. We understand that the health of Mr. Crawford is so for restor ed, that his friends think of- pro posing him for a scat in the Scn ath of the United States, in the room of Mr. Cobb, who speaks of resigning. Georgia is nearly una nimous for Gen. Jackson. Fay. Joiu Bundling, At the March term of the Monroe Circuit Court, at Bloomington, (Indiana,) a gentle man was fined 815, and a lady sentenced to twenty-five days im prisonment, for bundling three times. Rep ublica n . Brethren of the Baptist Deno mination Feeling the deepest interest for the prosperity of Zion and the salvation of souls, we be lieve it important that something should be done, more than is now in existence, to provoke each oth er to love and to good works, to consolidate us together as a bo dy, and to excite the public to consult the things which belong to their present peace and future felicity. We therefore believe, that if there were a meeting esta blished, by the name of the Union Meeting of the Baptist Denomina tion of North-Carolina, to meet annually, from place to place, and to continue four or five days; at which the preachers of this State would generally attend and con tinue preaching, praying, &c.and consulting each other on the state of Zion, communicating their views and feelings freely; with the blessing of Heaven it would effect the object designed. Feeling that we are actuated by the purest motives, and that we have the spirit of God appro bating such measures, and that it is in compliance with the injunc tion of the Apostle, that we should not forsake the assembling of our selves together, and that it will meet with the general approba tion of our denomination, we have appointed the first Union Meeting to be held in Raleigh, commenc- MARRIED, On Sunday, the 22d ult. by Jesse Speight, Esq. at his residence in Greene county, Mr. Thomas Williams, saddler of Stantonsburg, to Misi Harriet Lewis, of Pitt county. It was on a bright and blooming day, Nine men went up in bold array; And took her from the meeting ground, Where many look'd and gazed around. She was led off gently from the crowd, No one spoke, but many bow'd; As nothing there was said or done, We took the road and travelled on: Then went five miles near to a mill, But sent in front a certain Bill; We left behind a cock to crow, A certain man whose name is Blow. So this gentle pair were join'd together, And may they ne'er their promise sever, And to each other comfort give, So long as they on earth may live. May the saddler with his awl and knife. Procure food enough for himself and wife; And may his Harriet with her pan and pot, Cook three meals a day both good and hot. CONCLUSION. May this youthful pair together join'd, By their example show, That people may in wedlock find, A paradise below. Communicated. DIED, In tlie town of Halifax, on Tuesday last, JVm.
