Last week near Jamesville,
some bear or bears had been kill
ing the hogs of Dempsey Mizell
j who farms, assisted by his two
i sisters, Misses Lizzie and Mosella
■Mizell. Mr. Mizell with the two
women started out to catch Mr.
[Bruin in his ugliness. His Ma
jesty was located in a thicket and
(the young women went in with
j the dogs to run him out. They
i were successful and as the beast
appeared in the open he was
killed by Mr. Mizell. The Misses
Mizell arc not easily frightened,
■having lived so long in the sec
tion where bears seem to be abun
dant. Yet it was a brave thing to
do and there are many men who I
would have faltered.
Tuesday night, quite a number !
of the prominent citizens of the
town assembled at the City Hall
for the purpose of discussing the
proposition to light the town by
electricity. Town Cork, C. H. God
win called the meeting to order
and John L. Hassell w'as made

‘ tary. The object of the meeting .

was stated and the questions were |
discussed by those for and against
lights. It was finally decided to
make a contract for the lights
and avoid the' necessity of issu
ing bonds for which the people
voted in June. The Virginia-Car
olina Peanut Co., which proposes
with proper encauragment, to
build an immense factory here
was the favorite bidder for the
contract This was decided to be
given them for $2,400 per annum
with a contract and franchise for
twenty years. The proposition to
thus dispose of the matter re
ceived only five negative votes.
II. W. Stubbs was instructed to
arrange for the levy which will
be about fifteen cents on the
hundred dollars, but this will not
be done unless necessary.

Typhoid Fever for some time,

$3,200 Aulry Boots
In 'Loaded Pistols'
The most expensive pair of
cowboy boots ever made, costing
$3,200, are worn by Gene Autry
in Columbia's "Loaded Pistols,"
at the Vieear Theatre Saturday.
The boots were manufactured
in Houston, Texas, from the hide
of a $40,000 prize winning bull j
and were presented to Autry
when the star was in that city
to serve as grand marshal of the
annual Fat Stock Show
Autry wore the boots for the
first time m a scene with Bar
bara Britton, the first actress to
be co-starred with him, in his
latest musical Western adventure.
Five hundred and thirty ve
hicles were weighed and 157 were
found to be overloaded.
