Housewife Has
Tremendous Job
The amount of work performed
annually by the average house
wife is staggering when the sta
tistics are added up. With the ac
cent on labor-saving her job is be
coming easier. Time was when
the typical home maker walked
seven miles a day inside her own
house. Modern, compact kitchens
have reduced that by several
miles. Automatic dishwashers
have removed much of the drudg
ery from cleaning the 20.000 or
more dishes that the family of
four would use in a year. Now
a company adds a new statistic
based on the fiber milk contain
ers it manufacturers. The six and
a half billion one-trip paper con
tainers being produced bv the in
dustry this year weigh about an
ounce and a half each, while
round-trip types of containers tip
scales as much as 22 ounces. Mea
sured in quart size containers
alone it is estimated that about
10 billion pounds is saved in trips
between home and grocery store.
That gross tonage approximates
the weight of more than 16,000
main line locamotives of 300 tons
each — quite a load off mother's
back.'
