Since all vitamins and other nutrients have not been is olated and identified, the egg very probably contains nv ro un identified factors essential to our nutrition.” And for those on diets, the egg serves another purpose, according to Garten. “Since most of us con sume more calories than we need, another advantage in eating eggs j is their low calorie content. An egg contains only about 50 calor ies." Kggs produced by hens fed a commercial laying mash are espe cially nutritious, says Garten. A great deal is known about the nutrient requirements . of the chicken. Feed manufacturers pack these nutrients in the laying mashes they produce. The hens which ait1 fed these diets high in vitamins, minerals, and protein are able to deposit huger quanti ties of these nutrients in their eggs. The one who benefits by the process is the consumer. "Eggs are a good fdod for hu man beings of all ages," explains Garren. COREY Plumbing Co. Open Saturday Afternoon ! Garden Time In | "Eastern Carolina —*— ' By Robert Schmidt I A good lawn, well kept, is aj beautiful thing and is an asset to j any property. This Is not the proper season to plant lawn gras ses—except Bermuda and Centi pede—but from now on through the hot weather is the critical I period in the maintenance of the lawn, A lawn should be fertilized l every live to six weeks through out the growing season If you haven't already done so, pul on an application of a good garden fertilizer such as a ti-8-ti at the [ rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Water this in or apply it just before a rain. For the re mainder of tile season use about five pounds of nitrate of soda per 1,000 square feet at tacit ap plication. This should he applied when the grass is dry and pre ferablv just before a rain. Watering is a very important operation. Soak the soil thorough at least once a week during dry weather rather than light sprink lings each day, although these light sprinklings do some good. Frequent cutting is desirable, but close cutting will do much harm to some of the better grass es such as bluegrass Set the ;t«ov. < . *■ :4S!e higher for these grasses. If you have a good stand of grass and keep it well fertilized and limed when necessary, weeds will not thrive in a lawn. If weeds become established now is a good time to eliminate them with a spray of 2, 4-D with care because it will kill your shrubs and flow ers as well as the weeds. Even the spray mist carried by the wind may cause a lot of damage other plan'. sprays available that will kill out rrabgrass without harming the principal lawn grasses. I have recently noticed adver tisements of a new spray for lawns that is supposed to keep grass trom growing and therefore, make mowing unnecessary.
