The shooting was witnessed by Captain Johnson of the gas boat Ray. plying between this city and South Mills. According to Captain Johnson's story Hodges drove Into South Mills from his home just before the shooting. Crossing the canal bridge Hodges drove paBt Wil liams store and the store of Mr. niggs, next door to Williams, and hitched his horse behind the store buildings. Coming from the rear of Rigg's store Hodges stepped up on the porch which extends along the front of both store buildings. He was accosted by Williams who wanted to know If Hodge had been threatening to kill him.
