But we must worry along until we get enough bu siness to ad at least two pages to the paper. o . The hens that are working under electric light at Raleigh certainly can't be accused of not doing their bit to bring down the high cost of living. o . The Allies have occupied Constantinople. And may the flag of the Turk nevermore float above the towered mos ques and minarets of the City of Constantine. 0- There is really only one ob stacle to tax reform in North Carolina today and it lies in the clumsy thinking of uninformed rninds in the economic illiter acy that Mr. Vanderlip rightly says is threatening the entire world today. University Isfews Letter. Are our schools doing any thing to combat illiteracy of this sort? 0 We see our hopes of a new earth as a result of war and sacrifice glimmer and fade; but Heaven in infinite pity and . compassion, and in a fresh and . undiscouraged effort to save the world, sends us a new gen eration of little children. And looking at the shining ranks of this army marching daily to its task in the school room we thank God and take courage. 0- The fight against venereal diseases inaugurated by the Government as a result of the revelations of war should be waged to a finish, without truce, without armistice and without parley. Prostitution is a mon ster of more hideous mien than German frightfulness. The in nocent babes that it has slain or maimed would make all the slaughter of the world war seem insignificant. 0 The Advance finds itself ac cused of having given its friend, Hallet Ward, a raw deal in its report of his speech at the courthouse here this week. Nothing was far ther from- our purpose. Hut Ward is a rapid talker and if he wishes to be quoted as say ing exactly what he means to say he ought to take the time to provide the newspapers with an advance report of his speech. He may not be sure of the exact language that he is going to use on any occasion but he certainly knows what he wants to say. The first inkling that Ward would speak here last Monday came to this newspaper when the banner announcing the speak ing was discovered swung ac ross Main street Monday morning. AGONY COLUMN (By John I'ecle) I'M VERY MUCH INTERESTED IN COURT AND 'MOST ALWAYS I'M STRONG FOR THE JUDGE ESPECIALLY SINCE THE TIME WHEN JUDGE J10NI) CALLED ME CP TO THE BENCH AND CALLED ME THE LITTLE EDITOR AND SHOOK HANDS WITH ME Jl'ST AS IF I HAD BEEN A GROWN CP EDITOR AND EVER SINCE WHEN THERE IS COURT I HAVE INSISTED ON TAKING THE JUDGE A PA PER . EVERY AFTERNOON ON MY WAY HACK FROM THE EVENING TRAINS AND Till S WEEK THERE'S A NEW JUDGE AND I LIKE HIM SO MUCH THAT I EM HARASS MY DADDY BY TALKING TO HIM SO LONG WHEN I TAKE MIM THE ADVANCE AND THE NEWS AND OBSERVER EACH EVENING AND DADDY TELLS ME THAT JUDGES ARE Bl'SY MEN AND LITTLE BOYS MUSN'T BOTHER THEM BUT I'VE GOT TO BOTHER SOMEBODY NOW HAVEN'T I? AND LAST NIGHT AT THE SUPPER TABLE I KEPT TELLING MOTHER ABOUT THE NICE JUDGE WHO LOVES LITTLE BOYS AND NEVER TELLS ME MY PAPER IS NO GOOD AND I WAS TELLING HER THAT I WANTED TO GO TO SEE THE JUDGE AT HIS HOME WHEN HE LEAVES HERE AND DADDY WAS TRYING TO SAY SOMETHING HIMSELF iOf course we may get no better ice service than we have been accustomed to this sum mer, but the new delivery wa gons certainly seem to promise something. ' o America is not the loser 'n the exodus of citizens who brook no interference with the liberty of unlimited consump tion of intoxicating liquors. U : Immigration should be re stricted to aliens of good character and good health who desire and expect to become American citizens. The best are none too good for America. o Three cheers for daylight saving whether we move our clocks back or not. Every body fall in line.
