The Journal of Tuesday, in an article " inviting the democrats of New Hanover to rally and stand firmly together, says : u When a man becomes a Know Nothing We ceases to be a democrat." We do not know whether this is intended as" a piece of news, or as a denunciation. If the for mer it is exceedingly valuable because of its truthfulness, being a fact that every one believes and no one denies. If intended for the latter, it is quite amusing, for a free American will care just about as much for " democratic denunciation as he would for the squealing of a- pig. To such a man .the authoritative tone of party reprehen sion, is like the roaring of a "sucking dove," spoken of by the gentleman in one of Shakespeare's plays. ' -The democrats are spoken of as being carried captive into the " Fedaral Camp," by the operations of the Know Nothings. This is the old party slang, unmeaning as it is perversive, : and will answer only for those who have no will of their own, but are the mere slaves of party leaders. . The Journal speaks of the party as be ing " as true as steel to the principles of Jefferson, of Jackson and of Polk." This is another misfasbion of sense and reason, - and gives mere unmeaning worA for doc trine. If the Journal had added, "Polk, Texas and Oregon and Fifty-four forty or fight," and " our party is our country the sentence would have been more complete. CASE OF CONSCIENCE. A M case of conscience " has turned up in New Haven. A few years ago a stave factory on Long wharf, owned by W. H. Ellis, anf occupied by S. J. Clarke, was set on fire and damaged to the amount of some hundreds of dollars, the insurance on which was paid by the office from which the policy had been taken. Nothing trans pired to thrown any light on the origin of the fire until a few days since, whenataan went into the insurance office alluded to. and confessed that he wa the individual who had 6et that fire, and declared hi3 in tention to make full restitution, paying down : at the same time $100 as a bernuninsr. ' , There ia much complaint against a Com mittee appointed to examine a Convent, or a collection of Roman Catholic sisters of some sort, in Roxbury, nd one of the Committee behaved so badly that the Legislature had the case under consideration. There seems to be such a disposition to suppress the truth to clear the Committee, on the one hand, and to exaggerate on the other, that we are una ble to present a satisfactory report to our readers. Itis very certain, however, that th ladies in the Convent were most shamefully and. causelessly insulted, by a Committee of the enlightened Commonwealth of Massa rtiuseits, who. not content with the quantity of mischief contained in their own body, added other rowdies to their number, so that ten or twelve persons, instead of three or lour, did swagger in the peaceful domicil of seven Nuns helpless, and, perhaps, entirely virtuous women wiih their twelve scholars. If the examination had been conducted in a manner becoming Christians, or person under the ordiiiary restraints of gentlemanly propriety', we should have approved the mat ter. n a necessary course to expose guilt, if any, and lo vindicate the innoceney of those who might not be guilty of any criminal or improper conduct ; for, base and unprinci pled as we conceive many of the Priests who visit Convents t be. we do notf by ajiy means. admit thai all the inmates of Convents, or a majority of them, are destitute of all that is amiable in woman by no means ; we believe that a large portion of them are entitled to the estimation that is fully claimed by the pure and pious women, ofevery denomin;kiion and that those who are otherwise have be come eo from the villainy of wolves in sheep's clothinsr. called Roman Catholic Prit st. It may be that evury woman in the Con vent'vieited was without reproach, and they should have been treated with courtesy and kindness, ns f.ir as a just performance of the duties of the Committee c.iuld possibly allow. Had those vulgar boors no wclf-behaved and decent mothers, sisters, daughters, or female relatives, that they had "never had an oppor tunity of knowing how the sex are anil ought to be treated 1 Why, a club of Camauches would have behaved with more decency ! We hope the Legislature of Massachu setts will never appoint another Committee, on a like ccation, unless they can find men among them who have some idea ol eocia' refinemr nt in manners, and have, fh them selves, some of the elements of Christian civilization. Since writing the above, we learn, Irom the report of the Legislative Committee, that only one of the Committee -behaved, in the outrageous manner commented upon in our remarks, but still there was complaint on the part of the inmates ol the house, that the conductof the party was offiinfive, by reason of approaching loo closely the bedoide of a sick pupil. fannyTern's BESTTHING. " Father is coming P and bright eyes sparkle for joy, and tiny feet dance with glee, and eager faces press against the window panes, and a bevy of rosy lips claim kisses at the door, and picture books lie unrebuked on the table, and tops and balls, and dolls, and kites are discussed, and little Susy jays her soft cheek against the paternal . whiskers with the most fear less, abandon, and Charley gets a lovepat for bis 4 medal,' and mamma's face grows radiant, and the evening paper is read (not silently, but aloud.) and tea and toast and time vanish with equal celertty, for jubilee has arrived, and " father has come." TOE "ANGEL GABRIEL" IN TRISON. John S. Orr alias the " Angel Gabriel" seems to have met with a rather poor recep tion on his return to his native country, alter his visit to the United States, wherehe re mained long enough to disgust his friends by his inflammatory harangues.-. It appears, from the London News, that he has just been sentenced to prison for sixty days at Green ock, Scotland, for creating a breach of the peace by holding forth on Sundays in the streets, after being cautioned by the authori ties. His imprisonment, it appears, caused much excitement, and a - large mob having gather ed, attacked a Roman Catholic Chapel, and. after doing it considerable injury, broke in the windows of the clergyman's residence, and those of the school and the teacher's resilience attached to the Church.
