14 WILMINGTON, N. C?, SATURDAY MORNING, JUNE 16, 1855. WHOLE NUMBER 1143 VOLUME X NUMBEK 41. A ? f ' St Z"l . M ' '& Ml It ( i O M M CIVW - Jl .III III MISCELLANY. Hurtling A Negro at the Stake In Alabanra. We have already recorded the murder of Miss Thornton a respectable young lady, near Gaston Alabama, by a gegro man. The horrible affair created the great est excitement, and subsequently the mur derer was forcibly taken from the custody of the cival authorities by a mob, and put xo a terrible death, an account of which is Urns given in the Marion Republican of the 2th ult., On Friday last, after due preparation, hey carried him to the spot where h so cruelly murdered iiis innocent victim, and burnt him alrve at the stale e. About tbree thousand persons were present, who wit- nessed, with various" emotiona, U dreaelful.- speetacle. We were present, but hope that we will never again witness a scens Jike it. The pyre was com posed of" several -cords ofjighl wood, in the cntref which was a green willow stake, selected in con sequence of its indistructibility byfira. Ou the top of the pile of light wdod the criminal was placed, and securely chained to the stake. While in this situation he confessed his guilt, stating that he had no accomplice that he was actuated" by lust alote that he had attempted to violate her person, but had failed, and to conceal the attempt he had cruelly murdered -her. by beating ihe poor innocent creature with a stump; that while he was doing this she implored him to carry her home to her father, and that she would conceal- the violence he had. inflicted. He then left, but soon returned, and after again beating her he concealed the body in the very hole where the stake was planted to which" he suffered. ' v After this confession was made the match - was applied, and in a few moments the de vouring flames were enveloping the doom ed negro; his fearful cries rebounded ttrough. the air, while the surrounding Re groes witnessed his dreadful agony and horrible contortions sent up an unvoluntary howl of horror. His sufferings, though excrutiating, were short; in a few minutes the flames had enveloped him entirely, re vealing now and then as they fitfully sway ed, hither and thither, his black and burn ing cfacass, like a demon of the fire grinning as if in helish triumph at his tormentors. Soon all was over nothing was left but the burning flesh and the charred skeleton of the human devil, who could thus delib erately perpetrate so foul a crime, ' THE LOST PURSE. tfWhat are you going to do with, it T . What are you going to do with it " ex churned a half a dozen ragged urchins to a bright-eyed, thinly clad newsboy who was EoiJinir a splendid purse in ooe of his purple, cold hands, that he had taken but a few moments previous trotn tne side wafk. Return it to the owner " answered the little honest fellow, in a firm tone. ':A fool !" shouted the boys. "Wouldn't catch us returning a purse that looked as though it had lots of money in it as that does. Let's see how much there is, spoke . the, eldest of the group, and made an at tempt to wrest it from the boy's hand. "It shan't be opened. It is none of your business what it contains : it is none of ours; and if you don't loose your grasp upon it I will call the police, returned honest Johnny in a commanding tone. The boys knew that Johnny would do as he said ; hence they not only ceTised tor menting him, but stole away as if the po lice were already upon their tracks. When alone Johnny began to consider what it was best to do. Tl here was no way that he saw, by Which the owner could be identified by him. A thought struck him he would deliver it to the office of th chief of police. But he should lose the sale of hi3 paper3rf he attended to itthen, and if he did his mother and little 'sister must go without bread that night; for they had nothing to eat save that which the daily sale of newspapers brought What should he do? He- paused awhile, and then said: '-Alotner you had ratner go hungry to-night, I am sure ; I would rather too. than keep the purse until to-morrow morning. Let's see !" he put his hands in to his pocket, and after fumbling a short lime, drew forth three cents. "I've got raoncv enous-h to buv a loaf of bread for Tttle sister's supper and breakfast, and will go -without : so Twill go at once and carry the purse where the ownef can ob sain it." Thus spying, he trudged off, with the purse m one, hand and a large bundle of newspapers in the other. He whistled as he went, for although pinched with cold and hunger he felt happy because he was doing good. After disposing of the purse, and being called an ' honest little fellow" by. the po lice, he returned home and related to his mother how he had acted. She praised . hira for so doing, and said he must do right if he perished in the attempt. The next morning Johnny went from his ihome a little bluer and solder than usual, for h had no supper or breakfast to fill up his stomach, thereby keeping lht cold out At nightfall he was going home with a "light herrt, for he had sold papers enoug to buv bread to last his mother, sisters and himself. on day. when he was met by the gentleman to whom he had delivered the purse on the previons dav. "My litle fellow " -exclaimed the gentle man, patting him on the shoulder ; "the purse you left with me has been returned t the owner, who by the way, is an intimate friend of mine, ami to reward vou he has offered to take you into his employ and see wnat ne can make of vou." "Will he give wages enough to buy mo ther ant sister Dreaa " anxiously .inquired the lad. "Yes, returned the gentleman, "and more than that. Come, he addd. "we soon see what hell do for you." Thus say ing, he led the way to a large rik dwel ling, nearly Qppbsite to where they .had, been talking. .-. A" alight Ting: of the door bell brought the owner of the purse to the door. He yris informed that the tad before him was the one to whom he ras Indebted far the recovery of his lost property. Johnny was met 'with a .watm und hearty welcome from his new friendT'who not only promis ed to take the. honest boy into his employ, but that his mother and sister should be m-de comfortable" and happy. Tears of joy filled the litile fellow's eyes as he has- ened to mform his mother ot nis goou lor- tune. His mother was overjoyeu ai me pleasing tidings of her son, and she and Johnny neverafter had occasion to regret the iatler's conduct respecting me tost purse.--.JV. Y. Paper. SAD FATALITY. During the past spring, n number of fam ilies, cemposed of some fifty or sixty, per sons, left Bedford county, Va tfor the West, Illinois and Iowa. Out ot tins number, the Lt Bedford Gazette records the deaths of Mr. T. Jennyns Ofdhanj, wife and two chil dren: liemamin Davis; Jonn ivoo.nu and. chifdi Peter Stickler and child, and some ten or fifteen others. A number of these died -with disease conttactecr. on the river, and some of them, in one or two days af- er their arrival at their new homes. KINDNESS REMEMBERED. When Mr. Albert Morgan kept the Pa vilion at Gloucester several years ago one of his guests vas an Englishman named Erskine. He was attacked with the small fox, and, while all other attendants desert ed him, Mr: Morgan ministered faithfully to his wants till he recovered. A dny or two ago, we learn, the British Consul com municated to '- r Morgan the intelligence that Mr. Erskine hatl decesed and left him by will the snm of $ 1 25,000. This .is a munificent instance of English gratitude, and the recipient of the good fortune is quite worthy of it. We trust the figur; is not too high. Boston I'ost. THi: FAITHFUL DOG. We were touched by a simple state ment of the- loss of a boy and the fideli ty of a clog in last iverk's Caledonian. Ihe boy fell into I ho river in Barton, A 1 . unseen ty any one ttit a gin. - a large dog owned near by heard the splash, ran to the spot and leaped into the stream. It was just dark, and boy and dog disappeared before any help arri ved ; next day the bodies were taken from the water together, the dog, gras ping the boy's coat and vest collar in his mouth, .and the arms of the boy clasped around the dog's body. So firmly were they united in the struggle of d?ath that they were separated with no little diflieulty.. Tjie grasp of the hy around the body of the dog was such as to prevent htm from -using ins legs.' otherwise lie wonld doubtless have rescued the boy. Burlington Free Press. Some Western editors use dainty phra seology in describing the moral eccentrici ties 01 their people. Two boys iu Kntoi county fell into a dispute about some trifle, when one shot the other dead with a pistol. The local paper describes the bloody deed as an "unpleasant occurrence." , KNOW NOTHINGISM IN MD. A mass, meeting of the Whigs of St. Mary's county, Maryland, was held at Leonardtown on Wednesday of "last week. at which strong resolutions "were passed de nouncing the Know Nothing party, its principles, action, and organization. !
