We think they will catch him, but it will be after the f;ihion in which the mouse caught the cat. These men will not be long in -findig out two things first, that their secret is in the keeping of too many; and, second, that the law is a long-winded antagonist. When Ihry come to reflect upop these two facts hey will sec tin -i Jly building in their drcam." "THE TRAIL OF. THE SERPENT." Among sotno twenty inebriates who were ..Arraigned in the Hhce court jn Boston on Wednesday morning, was a ycrung girl of lifiecn years,. whose rare heauty seemed, strangely out of place iiv.a witnmal court. A year ago she was the priile and hope of lu:r friends in Cambridge, and enjoyed the esteem of a large circle of acquaintances. An intimacy with a student at Harvard, a rich man's son, eventuated in hef ruin. She was driven in disgrace froru the .par ental roof an outcast. Where could she go? The haunts of vice -and iri-j grave were open to her. Sht hesitated. At Cf- ivn the gruve looks dark and forbiding she entered n fashionable brothel, where she lms since consorted with the lost and aban doned of her sex. I his was her first ap pearance in the police court: there is strong and painful presumption that il wil not be her last. She evidently felt the degradation keenly. A light fine imposed upon' tor was kindly paid by a friend, and the was pcrraited to depart in peace. Who thai! say that the outcast was Itss .sinned against than sinning? Springfield Mas ) Republican June 8. THE BIBLE AND THE DISCOVERIES OF SCI . ENCE. The following eloquent passages are from Lieut. Maury slate work, the "Phy sicnl Geography of the Sea :'' "The Bible frequently makes allusion to the laws of nature, their operations and cherts. But such allusions are of ten to wrapped in the fold of the prcu iiaiv and graceful drapery with which its language is occasionally clothed, that the meaning, though peeping out from its thin covering all the while, yet lives in some sense concealed, until flm lights and revelations of science are thrown up on it; thrn it bursts out and strikes us with the more force and beauty. As our knowledge of nature and her laws has increased, so has our under standing of many passages in the Bible Teen unproved. The Bible called the earth 'the round World yet for ages it was tlie most damnable heresy for chns tian men to say the world, is round ; and hnally, sailors circumnavigated the globe, proved the Bible to le right, and saved Christian men of science from the stake. 'Canst tnou tell the sweet in flit ence of the Pleiades?' Astronomers of the present day, if they have not answered the question, have thrown so much light upon it as to show that, if ever it Jbe answered by man, lie must consult the science of as 4ronomy. It has recently been all but proved that the earth and sun, wuh their splendid retinue of comets, sattelli- (es, and planets, are all in motion around some point or center of attraction incon ceivat ly remote, and that point is. in the direction of the star Alon, one of the Pleiades! Who but the astromer, then, could tell their sweet influences And as for the general' system of at mospheric circulation which I have been so long endeavoring to describe," the Hi blc tells it all. in a single sentence . -The wind goeth toward the South and ttrrocth about into the North ; it whirl . rth .about codtinualy, and the wind re- mrneth again according to his circuits. Reel, i. 0." Tim LATE AMOS LAREXCE. The Boston- Transcript gives a biVf iketcli ot the Diary and Coi respoudence f ihc late Amos Lawrence, which has been -printed lor private distribunoH iunong the. -fjriend of the dpceased. Tle Diary say : ... -'I Jiavc . uJfer in my life rmnked a igar ; never die wed but one quid, and that before I was fifteen, and never took an ounce of snufF." In 1S07 he came to Boston with $30 in his pockef, feeling, as he says, "richer thaA I had ever (eh "before or have felt since,f,,aird he gave the neighbor who dava him'to the city 2 of hm 20. They, within this period, a motfntcd to $639,000 ; and added to his prior unrecorded charities, probably make a total of seven hundred thousand dollars. ' DONTPILL.TIIE GRAVY 1 . Catlin, the famous American traveler and collector of Indian curiosities, has seen some 6tirung incidents in tbo course of his adventures. The following is rela ted by a fellow-traveler, who gave Calfn the sobriquet of "Governor:" "One day when we had landed, and most ofour party were lying-asleep on the boat, which was drawn under the shade of soma large trees, the Governor and I had collected wood. and made a large ire on the bank, two or three rods from the boat, over which we were roasting a fat.pig, which I had shot from the boat during the morning. I was squat dowa on one side of the fire,bold- ing a saorl pandle irymg-pan nv.whjch we had made some very rich gravy, whieh the Governor, who was squatted down opposite me, was lading over the pig, with an In dian wooden sp ion. AH of a sudden 1 ob- servfwl-'his eye. fixed upon something over J my shoulder, when he said to inein ver' low tone, 'Now, I want you to keep per-fectly-jcool, and don't spill your gravy : (here is a splendid tiger rigkt behind you 1' 1 held fast to the frying pan, and. turn inginyhead gradually around", I had 'a full view of the fellow -within eight paces of me, flat on his side, and-with his paws lifting vp and ploytuff with the loers of "one of our Spaniards, who had laid himself down upon hjs belly, aid was fast asleep. Our Tides were left hi the boat f Tlie Gov. ernor drew himself gradually 'down the bank, on his hands and feet, ordering rue not to move. I was .in liopes he would have takcj the Minte, hat bV preferred his own weapon, and srettinsr it to bear unon die beast, he was obliged to wait Borne minutes for it to raise its head, so as not to endanger the poor Spaniard ; at the crack of the rifle, the animal gave a piercing screech, ami leApt about fif'leeB feet straight into the air, afad fell quite dead.1 The Spaniard leapt nearly as far iti a dilfrrent direction, ami, -at the samein s:auf, from behind a little bunch of bush es o;i the opposite side, and not half the distance froui orir'firej and'nght liehind the Governor's back, -where he had been sitting, sprang the mate, which darted into the thicket $nd disappeared. A e skinned this leautiful animal, vhich wtis shot exactly between his eyes, and, after all hands had withdrawn to the boat, waited several hours in hones thai the other one would iliow itself again : but we waited in vain, -and lost our game " " " ; BEEF CATTLE. The Albany Knickerbocker of the 10th instant says, on Friday a drove of two hundred and fifteen cattle arrived in this city from Texas, bciing .the first cattle from -that State that CTer passed through Albany. They left Texas some four months ago. They were driven from Tex as to the Mississippi, up the Mississippi !o Illinois, where they spent some fifty days in recruiting. From Illinois they came down the Lake to Buffalo, and from Buf falo to Albany by the Central Railroad. By the time they reached the Hudson they had tramped about 2200 ini!es. They were in fine condition, and exhibited a shape that speaks well for the cattle breed ers of the South. Owing to the "absence of winters, and the superabundance of pas tures, Texas must end will become the greatest cattle State in the Confederacy. At the present time good oxen can be pur chased in the vicinity of Austin for $30 a bead. lu this city, a prime bullock is worth from $100 a $225. Such a' difference af fords, we would think, a fine margin for profits. UENNETT &, BIIOKAW, J- PRODUCE COMMISSION MERCHANTS. f FOB THE SAI.K Ot' - Flour, Grain and Seeds, Butter, Chstse, Lard.
