She itn.d evidently been enticed into tiae woods by some devilish fiertd hi hutnira ahape, -and men brntalHr murdeicd. , We tefraifi, t present, from prudential considera tions, from publishing the names gaff any suspected o'f thrs foul deed, or to give currency to the many rumors connec ted wiih the matter, i'f'be girl and her pa rents were highly respectable. This shock ing a rial r has created: the most intense ex citement throughout the whole neighbor- .hood. 1'atrtot. j BEAUTIFUL IN DEATH. We learn from the Norfolk Argus, that timber, planks, etc., from the wreck of the Monmouth, are strewr along 'the shore near Little Creek inlet. That paper saye : "We learn that trunks, clothing and oth- er articles have been found nce the acci dent happened. Bat oil Thursday, the body of a little gul aboot seven years of age floated ashore. We learn from a gen tleman who saw the corpse, that it was singularly beautiful. The wild rage of the angry surges that bore it rapidly to the canity shore, aided by the fury of the winds that sung its solemn requiem at midnight, all taned to depnve it of us oatrve charms. he full, Tound cheek, though pale and lifeless, and 'cold as marble, was still beau- tifol-MoVely in death. The light, silken tresses that lay upon its death cold brow and neck, with the well wrought lace work .that told of maternal pride and fondness, gave a sad interest to the infant corpse, as 4t lay there alone and still in Death's re lentless embrace, upon the cold sand, and way from the home of its infant loves and joyous hours, and the happy pastimes of .-simple cbudnood. j Of course, the remains of the unknown snnoceot were deoentiy laid in the grave fiw in the grave' Other bodies will docret be found." PANTHER KILLED. - A Panther, measuring nine feet from tip fnend to bespnukks it, without mternipt tto tip, was tilled in 12 miles of this place, .,ng Its progress over the paper, with a mays the Daht-looeira Signal, near the foot lotion calculated to invigorate it. An Ice Machine has just been comple ted at the Cuyahoga iron works, Cleve land, Ohio, which, it is stated, is capable of producing one ton of solid crystal ice in 20 hours. A trial has recently T been i snoade with the above result, while the mer-1 ury stood at BO degree ia tae apartment 4 The estimated expense of manufacturing ice by such a mhitie is 5 per ton, or one-fourth of a cent per pound. SOUNDING THE ATLANTIC?. The Steamer Arctic, which arrived at New York oil-Tuesday, h;is sounded ,he Atlantic all the way acmss, finding the greatest depth 2,0fO IHihoms (more than two miles.) It was not accom plished without difficulties as many of the instruments used were new invert tions. The bed of the ocean in the sec tion traversed by the Arctic, is a phttau. as already announced by Captain Berry- man, who had twice beloie sounded across the Atlantic. The bottom in ,the deepest part is a very fine mud, of a mouse-gray, color, so -soft that the sounding instruments frequently sank several feet into the mud. They brought up specimens of the bottom, at every sounding, in quils which were attached to truend of the sounding instrument."! Towaru - the shore on each side, this mud changes into a fine green ooze. No other sub stances were met with, no rock, nor anything that might prove fatal to a telegraph wire. There seems to- be now nothing to hinder the great work, to unite Europe and Ametica by means of a telegraph wire, an undertaking so grand that few thought it possible. The whole distance across was found to be 1,649 sea miles, from St. John, N. P., to Valentia Harbor, Ireland. The greatest depth was found nearly in the centre between these two places. The profile of the Atlantic bed, on this route, is of by far easier grade than many of our rail road prohles. A MURDERING PARSON. A black republican paper, published in Kansas, after giving an exulting ac count of one of the late skirmishes, thus triumphs in lb death of a border ruffi an i lie was shot through the heart by a clergyman named Martin White. Af ter teing killed, and while lying on the ground with the mouth relaxed and open in death, another shot was fired down his throat. The American Citizen says 'the Mar- I tin White who performed, these "exploits is the same chivalrous divine who fre quently supplies Bcccher's pulpit in Brooklyn. A SKRIOVd ACCIIDEMT FKOSI AS EXPLO.Oj. Baltimore, Oct. 23. A colored yiil in the employ of Mr. Dixon, who lives on tne south-east cornei ot (jie'ii and Lexington Mrects, was lioriil.ty binned o;i Tuesday evening by the explosion of an ethereal oil lamp. It seems she was asleep near the lamp, and that she made a move anl knocked it over. when it burst, and the oil filling uixm her, it became ignit d, and she w.-.s im mediately enveloped in flames. She at once ran into the street shrouded in the bltze, at a moment when Mr. Lewis Claggett, clerk of the steamer Belvidere, was passing witn some ladies in an om nibus, when he stopped the coach, leap ed out, and pulling otf an over coat as well as An under coat, seized the girl, and throwing her upon the pavement. enveloped her in these garments, arid thus "Smome red the flames, but not with out suffering seriously himself, as one of his hands was burned in a horrible manner, and to such an extent that some of the fingers have burst open from its effects, while the whole hand is blistered in such a way as to cause him much agony. In addition to this sad occurrence, which will, probably, disable mm tor some time, he has also suffered the loss of both his coats, thev being so burned as to be useless. .The clothing ot the girl was almost entirely burt:ed off, and her logs and body so burned that it -was then thought she could not recover, but she had so far improved up to yesterday afternoon as to be pro nounced out ot danger. A man accepted a challenge to make one million -strokes 'wffh a pen and ink within a month; not to be mere stretches or dots, but fair down strokes, such as lorms the ctulds first lesson in writing. The month was to be four weeks, he was to abstain from the task on Sunday: so that he must average 36,000 strokes per day. On the first day he executed 50,000 strokes, on the second day near ly as many, run at length, alter rnanv days, the hand became stiff and weary, .1 m. 11 - i . ine wnsi swollen, ana it required the constant attendance of a relation or lnrt twenty-third day the million strokes, exceed ea Dy some lew tlwusand "to make the assuranc doubly suro." were accomplished.
