The Dumfries (Canada) Reformer of October 15th. contain the following ac count of a shocking1 event which occurred t the township of Mornington, Canada : " Oir pen has seldom had to record a rnore heartrending circumstance than we re about to relate. Some ten days ago, in the northerly extremity of the township tf Mornington, two females went out in the evening in search ;of their cows, ami, hot returning that nipht, search was made in the morning, when sad to relate, their skeletons were only to be found, their flesh baring been completely devoured by the Vol res. We are yet unable to record the particuianvthe sad outlines only having si yet reached us. Our informant also struct that a matt in that locality has been missing for the last, ten days. No trace of him can be found whatever, and tears are entertained that be met the same lamenta ble fate as the unfortunate women. S ,"Tht wolves were never before known to be so numerous or so ravenous as they are this season in this 'section of the coun try. It is regarded as unsafe to be alone on the public highways after dark. Re ports are reaching us; almost every week xf some of their ravages through the coun try. -Almost every botly has been visited by them and mischief done to a greater or less extent. ! "A farmer in North) Easthope had thir ty sheep killed in one 'single night by hm. A few nights previous they killed twelve belonging to the same man.? "Bears are also numerous and remarka bly saucy. A Mr. Bennett, of Mornington. was attacked a short; time ago in his own field, a little after, dark, by an old bear with three cuba. Hej fought her off till some of the neighbors1' came to hid relief. An immense one was killed in Mornington a few days ago." AN OLD MAN BURNT TO DEATH. A Pennsylvania exchange gives the fol lowing account of. a horrible acctdnt: "On Friday afternoion last a horrible ac cident occurred in the village of Evans burg, Upper Providence township Mont gomery county, by which an old 'gentle man named John Slough, a resident of that township, was burnt; to death. He was out riding with his daughter ; the latter got out of the carriage iuj Evansburg to do an errand, leaving her father sitting in the car riage. During her absence the old: gentle man struck a match for the purpose of Sighting a cigar, but which he accidentally dropped among the straw in the bdttom of Hie carriage, whichj immediately caught tire. The fire communicated to his cloth ing, and before assistance could be; render ed ibey were entirely; burnt from his body. He lived but a short tune nlier wards." Old Dr Rush,: ofiPhiladelphia, lused to relate a singular caae of monomania in a patient in the Philadelphia Hospital. He took it into bis head" that he was a painter, and resolutely refused 'for a long time, -though possessing fine organs of speech, to utter a word. Th doctor one da vSentered his apartment, and found him sketching on a slip of paper a really beautiful rose ; for Jhe had, by long- practice, acquired much -skill in the art pictorial, and was very proud of the accomplisbwsetit. f One day a thought struck Dr. Rbsh that 'he would surprse him into voice by dis jiraisinf his labors, and he resolved to trv. Clark, of New York, appointing a Thanksgiving Day in that State: In publishing it the New York Com mercial justly says: "It would. do any man, any family, good to read this pro clamation every day, or twice a day, at morning and eventide. In" earnest feel ing, devout temper, and simple eloquence we have rarely seen its equal in a gub ernatorial proclamation, It will move your heart! to thankfulness, reader, if you peruse it with care and thoughtful uess "The year that is now drawing to a close has been full of the mercies of our Heavenly Father. The Providence that dispenses the common blessings t)f life has not withholden its bounties. Throughout the borders of our great and prosperous State, man has been preserved in the enjoyment of lif and health. A plenteous harvest has been gathered in, while pestilence has only looked uj)Oii lis and departed. Never has labor received rewards more cheer ing. No fear of famiue, no apprehen sions of industrial distress orcommercia! panic, no dread of impending social calamity luingles with our joy. Kvery department of honorable human culture has advanced. The arts that adorn a republican State have not languished. The love of freedom has burnt with a brighter flame. "Our political rights have remained safe in the care if an enlightened and order-loving people. The public morals have not degenerated, and religion has not failed to eheer us by her consola tions, to warm ms by her solemn ad monitions, and to itrspire us by her eternal hopes. In view of this wonder ful display of the goodnessof God noth ing can be more appropriate than a sol emn act of thanksgiving by the whole people. I do therefore, and in pursu ance of established custnm, set apart and appoint Thursday, the 20th day of No vember next, to be observed through out the State as a day rf public thanks giving and praise. Audi respectfully request all the people of this State to abstain oh that day Tram their usual av ocations to assemble according to their religious customs and give thanks to Al mighty God, ihe givsr of all good. Let us implore Him to smile upon our future, to make us worthy of His bounties, and to pwtect atxJ preserve those institutions which enab'e man to glorify God and do his will upon earth. Let us especially thank Him that the great privilege of the American citizen the untrammell ed expressk)!! of ofinton, the defence of truth and justice, aud the denunciation of error and oppression is still lairs. And while we pray for forgiveness ol sins, as citizens of the State and sub jects of the Divine Government, let ns consecrate ourselves anew on that day Jo a religious life, which neglects no pri vate or public obligation on earth, while it confides to the grace of God for the hope-of an immortal life in Heaven. LIFE IN PARIS. The fashouable clubs of Paris have recently been thrown into some excite ment by the publication of the names of the most popular dandies of Paris whith their debts which are to be put up at auction and sold to the highest bidder. It looked at first like a sort of "black list," and nothing was talked of but liorsewhipping the impertinent scoun drels who asked for money which be longed to them. But if soon appeared that this publication was a matter ol form consequent upon the dissolution of a partnership, all the unpaid bills being sold at auction. It created a great deal of astonishment that such names should be found with such bills; for men repu ted to have large fortunes were found to have bills of seven and eight years' standing unpaid. - j FIRE IN ST.
