Being oue of the oldest and lar gest business houses in this county, it naturally caused much com nent when it was lc.rncd thai Mi. Louis P. ljornthal had voluntarialiy be come bankrupt. dome tire so p;pue to unkind ;ii:d uncharitable criticism (ind justly su in many instances, we regret to s;o) that we feel it no more tn.-sn fa:r to Mr. Horuthal to say that the (Joint before which the. transaction was made1, Mien .he ufured to jsui;render his personal jeweln, etc., remarked that it was cleaner and fiver from any appearance of - fraud than any like occurrence .tlyit had twqi come before it. The main cause of the failure .jseems to have ,b lr. ilorntha easy nature in not forcing to set tlement thoce in,hu ncial cramp themselves, owing to ehort crops, low prices, etc. dn fact we h;ye heard several say In was the host friend they ever had, and regrets at Ins misfortune are heard on every hand, while many are anxious that when everything is settled he may be in position to do so, and will de cide to continue in business here. They Had Not Forgotten. In our last issue we mentioned tue fact that we were informed that the picture of lion. Thos. W. B.ount was not among the decorations in the Graded School.buildiug. We are glad to say that the Fac ulty and Utieersof the school had not forgotten this great champion of education, and that when the final decoration was done the picture of Mr. Blount not only occupied a prominent place in the Recitation hall, but also in each chus-j'oorn jbung a likeness of this man who his done so much for the cause of educa tion in the State, especially in his native county, aiid.th .children ai earning to love and respect him as a living benefactor, whose memory, in $ftter years they will chperish as the man who made it possible for them to get an education. e are also glad to note that a committee has be.e appointed .to communicate with Dr. J. T. Hamp ton, of Pennsylvania, asking him to fur uisii this school with a picture of nimself and also one of his deceased wife, Mrs. Clara Cooper Hampton. It will 1)0 remembered that this building was erected and presented to the town by Dr. Hampton, which gift our people npf-p and more ap preciate every day. We understand that it was a re quest of Mr3. Hampton before she died tiiat a cert.'iiu sum of money be expended iu erecting, somewhere, a school, home or hospital, and Dr. Hampton, after due consideration, let his love for the dear old town of his childhood and the great need of this town, induce him to erect this building and thus erect to the mem ory of his wife an institution that would do the greatest good to the greatest number, and when it was completed aud across the front in bold letters was p'aced the words, "Hampton Academy," we believe that fiom the window of heaven came from the lips of that angel wife a smile of approval.
