C. -- To Teach In Lincolnton Miss Barbara Norman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Z. V. Norman, left this week for Lincolnton, where she will teach Home Economics in the high school. Waynesvillc Visitors Dr. and Mrs. Siske, of Waynes vilie, were week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. George Scott. Mrs. Scott and son accompanied them home. Garrett - Brown The marraige of Miss Lula Louise Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S. R. Brown, of Plymouth, to Harry Garrett, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Garrett, of Plymouth, was solemniz ed at the home of the bride’s par ents at 7 o'clock Thursday morning, January 8. The Rev. O. L. Hard wick, pastor of the local Methodist Church, officiated. The bride wore a dress of sky blue with conrtasting accessories. Her corsage was of white roebuds. Following the ceremony the bride's parents were hosts at a wedding breakfast which by attended by Mr.; and Mrs. Garrett and Frank Garrett in addition to the bride and bride groom and members of the Brown family. The young couple left aft erwards on a trip to Florida. Upon their return they will live in the Garrett home temporarily. For traveling the bride wore a brown suit, short fur coat with black accessories. Thursday Afternoon Club j Meets With Mrs. T. L. Bray Mrs. L. T. Bray entertained the Thursday Afternoon Club on Janu ary 8. Mrs. L. E. Hassell, a former mem ber of the club, was present as a new member. Mi-s.'C. L. Blount presided over the meeting. The library committee reported that 10 new books had been bought for the library. Antique silver and jewelry, which were brought by the club members, were displayed and discussed. Mrs. L. W. Zeigler gave a synopsis of the opera “Carmen.” Several se lections from the opera were played on a phonograph. A dinner in two courses were serv ed in the dining room at the conclus ion of the program. Patriotic dec orations were used. E. AYERS, Agent Regular Meeting of Junior Woman's Club For January Held Here Monday Evening Me:dames Winona White. Rankin Ambrose. C. C. Slankard and Miss Agnes Davis were hostes r to the P,ymouth Junior Woman's Club last Monday evening, when it met for the January session. Tire president. Mrs. W. J. Highsmith, ji . presided, and the program for the evening fea tured Mrs. S. A. Ward, sr., as the chief speaker, her subject dealing with “Clara Barton." founder of' the international Bed Cross organization. In the business session, the club members decided to sew and knit for the Red Cross, with Miss Ruth Mc Lemore and Mrs. Ned Swain in charge. Thursday night the mem bers will meet with Mrs. H H. Allen for this purpose and thereafter at j the convenience of the hostesses. Plans were made to present a ■‘Womanless Wedding" at an early date. Following a suggestion by Mrs. R. 3. Trotman. the club voted to spon sor Defense Stamp clubs in the local schools. Mrs. Joe Arps and Miss Ruth McLemore were asked to take charge of this work at the high school Thursday afternoon and Mrs. Lin wood Brown at the primary school. Ten dollars were donated to the Red Cross Emergency Fund and $5 to the school lunch room each month. Sales of Christmas Seals for the ben efit of tuberculosis work were report ed to have totaled $35 during the re cent campaign. A two-course supper was served, a patriotic color scheme being used. Mrs. Katherine Ambrose was a vis itor. Receives Announcement Of Marriage of Sister Mrs. Claude Walker this week re ceived the following announcement of her sister's marriage: "J. W. Odom announces the marriage of his daughter, Madeline, to Halbert Burns in Bennettsviile, S. C., on Sunday, Decemebr 28. at 4 p. m. Probate Judge John P. Kinney officiated." Mrs. Burns is the daughter of J. W. Odom and the late Mrs. Odom, of Laurinburg. Mr. Burns, the son of Mrs. Katie Burns and the late Mr. Burns, of Maxton, holds a po sition with the Ford Motor Company in Red Springs. Mr. and Mrs. Davenport Honored at Party Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Davenport ,of Creswell, were honored on Friday night, January 9, at a surprise birth day party given by Mrs. Leon Dav enport, of Creswell, and Mrs. Hugh Swindell, of Plymouth, at the home of the former. The honorees received many beau tiful gifts and delicious refreshments were served. Many games and contests were en joyed. Those winning prizes were Mrs. L. M. S. C. S. Meets Thursday Afternoon Pleasant Grove The Woman's Society of Christian Service met at the home of Mrs. Clara Snell Thurs day afternoon. Mrs. W. B. Chesson presided. The devotional was rend ered by Rev. G. C. Wood. Mrs. FYank Wilson and Mrs. A. R. Hooker, of the Roper Society, were present to discuss refurnishing the Roper Meth odist parsonage. Each society is asked to aid in this undertaking Mrs. Bernice Hammond Is Honored Tuesday Evening Mrs Bernice Hammond was hon ored on Tuesday evening when her sister, Miss Marian Brinkley, enter tained for her on her birthday anni versary at their new home on Jeffer son Street. A pretty birthday cake centered the dining room table. The honoree opened her gifts and then Shep Brinkley accompanied on the organ while the guests sang many familiar songs. The refreshment hour followed. Guests included Mesdames W. F Winslow, C. McGowan. B. A. Sum ner, Ellis Maples, Nona Newman, H. I A. Williford. C. E. Ayers. R. W. John Iston, R. B. Trotman. E. W. Furgur son, H. S. Midgett and Miss Martha Hornthal. Due to bad weather and so many of the members being sick, the business session and program were omitted until the next meeting. Mrs. S. Z.
