Negro Senlenced to 28 Months on Roads For Series of Thefts -® Charlie Barnes Enters Plea j Of Guilty To Stealing From Judge The following cases were tried last Tuesday at the weekly session of re corder's court, with Recorder Edward L. Owens on the bench Clarence Axioms, colored of Plyrn outh, was found not guilty of assault with a deadl> weapon on Lucy Green, also colored, of Plymouth. In a com panion case, Lucy Green w'as found guilty of assault with a deadly wea- ! pon on Adams and fined $20 and I costs. James Blount, colored, of Plyrn- j outh, was booked for non-support of his two children However, he was found not guilty, while the prose- 1 cuting witness was taxed with the costs for bringing false and frivo- j lous charges against him Charlie Barnes, colored of Plym outh, was charged with stealing in 1 two cases, plead guilty to both, and | was given sentences totaling 28 months on the roads Jn tne iirst action, he admitted stealing $85 and and a pistol from the home of the i Recorder, E. L. Owens, for which he i received a sentence of 16 months. Then lie was given 12 months after ! he admitted stealing a bicycle from Simon Bland and selling it The sentences are to run consecutively, which means that he will be out of circulation for 28 months, less time earned for good behavior. Bennie Dawson, colored of Pl.vm outh, admitted operation ol a motor vehicle without an operator's license , and was fined $20 and the costs. Ralph Carlson Howell, white, of Plymouth, likewise plead guilty to operating a car without a driver’s li cense and was assessed the costs, -<s> Boy Scouts To Meet Each Monday Night Regular meetings of the Plymouth Boy Scout troop will be held every Monday night in the future, instead of Fridays as in the past, it was an nounced yesterday by the Rev. Lee A. Phillips, scoutmaster. All members are urged to be present next Mon day night at 8 o'clock, when plans will be made to revive interest in the troop and a program of activities out lined. Mr. Phillips took over the duties of scoutmaster last Monday night, and William Smith became assistant scoutmaster at the same time. Very few of the scouts were on hand for the meeting, so Mr. Phillips made ar rangements with Principal R. B Trotman to get together with the scouts during school yesterday, when he met with and urged them to at tend the regular meetings in the future. For the present, the scouts will continue to use their room in the basement at the courthouse as head quarters. Pfowever, is is hoped that a more suitable meeting place can be secured in the near future. That is one ot the immediate objectives of the local troop committee. Regional Teachers’ Meet Being Held Here Today -® Teachers from five counties will assemble at the Plymouth High School today (Thursday) at 3 p m for a regional meeting, it was an nounced last week-end by Fred Green of Raleigh, secretary of the North Carolina Education Associa tion The meeting will begin at 3 and end at 5 p m , with about 150 teachers from the counties of Beau fort Hyde, Tyrrell, Martin and Wash ington Counties expected to be in at tendance. Roper Parents and Teachers Organize And Plan Program First Meeting Held Tuesday Night in School There; 45 in Attendance In the Roper High School audi torium. the Roper Parent-Teacher Association held its organization meeting Tuesday night, when the 45 persons in attendance planned the year's program and the membership committee reported an enrollment of 57 members. At this first meeting of the year. Miss Lois Thompson, fourth-grade teacher, conducted the devotional; and Mrs. Louis El. Hassell, jr., pro gram chairman, welcomed the pa irons of the school and announced the PTA program theme, "Protect - ing Children. R. B. Forbes, princi pal, introduced the teachers. Mrs Roger Chesson president, presided at the business meeting. Among the items decided at the business session were the following: After hearing the report of the school lunch room committee, the PTA voted to sponsor the school lunch room and authorized the com mittee to secure a manager for it. Principal Forbes announced that shades for the school windows have been ordered, and since all of the money to pay for the shades was not raised last year, the association voted to conduct a Buy-a-Shade campaign to finish par ing for them. Various members suggested that possible objective for the year be improvement of the walls of the rooms, improvement of playground equipment, repair of seats in the au ditorium. and cleaning of the stage curtain. Merchants Hold Meeting Here Last Monday Night Plymouth merchants voted Mon day night to cooperate in the bond auction at the Plymouth Theatre next Wednesday night by giving var ied items of merchandise to be auc tioned off. A committee of ttie asso ciation canvassed all business estab lishments here yesterday and secured at least one premium for the auction from everyone they saw Tlie merchants also voted to buy $50 worth of cigarettes to be sent to men in the armed forces overseas. Another action taken by the asso ciation Monday night was to author ize the building of several hitching racks in lots back of the stores for the convenience of farmers and oth ers who come here io trade. This committee went to work imme diately. and most of its appointments are announced in this paper. Leading farmers throughout the county are endorsing the campaign and appealing to other farmers to rally to the success of the campaign. Palmers aie somewhat handicapped at this time, as few of them, except (hose who raise tobacco, have har vested or sold any of their crops, but it is believed they can be depended upon to do the best they can under exist ing circumstances.
