Humphrey Bogart, Raymond Mas sey and Alan Hale head a cast that features Julie Bishop, talented blonde actress, and Dane Clark, a new dis covery from the Broadway stage. Others in the cast are Ruth Gordon, J. M. Kerrigan, Sam Levene, Chic Chandler. Dick Hogan, Peter Whit ney. Minor Watson Kane Richmond. Art Poster and Michael Ames. The picture tells the story of a group of men who ship out on a tanker laden with a cargo of high octane gasoline. Plowing its way through the foggy waters of the North Atlantic, the tanker is torpedoed by a lurking submarine. The men jump into lifeboats as the tanker breaks into flames and buckles admidships. THESE BI.OOD PLASMA CASES of weather-proof paper board made from pulpwood, shown being delivered by Red Cross workers to a C. S. Navy medical officer, are going to war aboard a battle ship. The large cases contain blood donations from twelve Amer icans; each bottle of blood plasma is in a separate carton, also made trom pulpwood, and with it a pint of distilled water. The plasma and water are mixed to make fluid which is saving the lives of our wounded soldiers. Because of the growing shortage, the Govern ment urged .farmers and woodsmen to cut more pulpwood—for Victory! Pulpwood Essential War Material, Head Of WMC Emphasizes -® Paul V. McNutt Appeals for Extra Effort During Vic tory Drive War Manpower Commissioner Paul V. McNutt recently clarified the at titude of the War Manpower Com mission as to the essentiality of pulp wood production in a statement to the Newspaper Pulpwood Commute. "Pulpwood is an essential war ma terial,” he said, “used among other things for making rayon parachutes, shipping containers and j&mokeless powder. “Its many wartime uses have cre ated a shortage which is rapidly be coming acute. With these conditions in mind, the War Manpower Com mission has recently classified pulp wood cutting and production of pulp as'essential war occupations. “May I urge every man engaged in this essential work, either part or full time, to give it the best he has in him. Let him remember he is wield ing his axe and saw in the same struggle and to the same end that other men are weilding bayonets and machine guns. “I know that the men who work in the forests and pulp mills and the farmers who cut pulpwood from their at the Maritime Union Hall, eager to sign up again. This time they sail on a new Liberty Ship, the “Sea Witch,” bound with a convoy for Murmansk. Running into heavy fog, the ships are scattered and attacked by subs. The “Sea Witch” gets away, but not for long. Soon she is at tacked by Nazi planes and hit on the forward deck. Some members of the crew are killed and Captain Jarvis seriously wounded. The at tacking enemy planes are shot down by the ship's gun crew. But the troubles of the “Sea Witch” are not yet over. It is only after a hazardous encounter with a sub that she is skillfully brought into Mur mansk by Chief Mate Possi, pinch hitting for the wounded Captain Jar vis. “Action in the North Atlantic" w-as directed by Lloyd Bacon, who served in the Navy during World War I and is now a Lieutenant-Commander in the United States Naval Reserve. The cutting of wood, in cluding pulpwood, also is included among the essential farm products listed by the Selective Service as a guide to local boards in the defer ment of registrants engaged in agri culture. As in all such cases, however, the local selective service board is re sponsible for determining whether a specific registrant's occupation is in support of the war effort. War Manpower Commissioner Mc Nutt is the fifth top-ranking war agency chief to support the Victory Tex Ritter Co-Star In New Movie With John Mack Brown -^ Deep in the Heart of Texas’ Shows Saturday at Plymouth Theatre -$ Inaugurating a novel entertain ment venture, Tex Ritter, famous singing cowboy of the screen, has joined Johnny Mack Brown, Univer sal's popular western hero in co-star ring honors for a series of outdoor adventure dramas. The first one, ■ Deep In the Heart of Texas,” comes Saturday to the Plymouth Theatre. Ritter, popular idol of scores of boots-and-saddles features, will pro vide musical highlights in addition to his acting chores. In the current picture he sings "Cowboy's Lament." Oliver Drake composer, also wrote the original screen play and served as associate producer on the film. Fuzzy Knight, Brown's comedy sidekick on the screen for the past few years, is again headlined. Jennifer Holt, daughter of the fa mous star, Jack Holt, adds to her list of versatile screen performances with her assignment to the romantic lead opposite the co-stars. William Far num has a prominent role. The Jimmy Wakley Trio, composed of Wakley, John Bond and Scotty Harrell, present "Song of the Sage." written by Bond. The story of "Deep In the Heart of Texas," adapted to the screen by Grace Norton, deals with the excit ing fight to establish law and order in the Lone Star state during the colorful but dangerous period follow ing the Civil War.
