C. ’mmmmt KNOWS mi-:n by nicknames nick- didn’t Legion's National Adjutant Hac Ac quaintanceship Among Membort of tlie 11,000 Posts. There Is one magnificent difTerence, among others, between the American Le;;ion of today and that Legion of C. Julius Cnce- ar’s day. No one tk the latter out fit knew more than a cohort or two of private soldiers and ordi nary officers by their -first names. The American Le gion has a maa who knows thou sands of his Le gionnaires by tlieir favorite names. But Caesar’s hosts have any national adjutants to speak of. Legion posts are established in practically every conimunity tp the United States and Legionnaires have carried their 41ag into 20 foreign coun tries. In every one of these far-flung 11,(XM) posts there are one or ra»we men who know Lemuel Bolles. Mr. Bolles, then, knows them. Ever since the Legion was organized in France Mr. Bolles has been identified with it. Since its first convention in Minneapo lis in 1919 he has. been national ad jutant, and as such he has met per sonally or corresponded with thou sands of Legion men and women. His duties have taken him into almost all the 48 states during these three years, and he receives u thousand or so let ters each week. He has, without doubt, the largest personal acquaintance with men of arms ever enjoyed by any in dividual since armies were invented. Sir. Bolles was born in Minneap<»lis, grew up on the runges of the Dako- tas and was estaldished in Seattle, Wash., when he entered active servi<-e for the World war. He began his military career as a private in a Na tional Guard company. Overseas he served as a col»»iiel on the general ttalT of the First army corps, and was decorated with the Legion of Hon or of France.
