Other ?winners were the Faculty over the Webster High School, 47-24, and the Scouts over the Woodmen, 29 26. Doug Davis was the big gun in Buck's win with 12 points. Rector led the losers with 8 points. The loss threw Velt's into a first place tie with Boodleville. The two play Wednesday, Feb. 25 in a game that ?will decide the city league champ ions. For the Faculty the scoring was distributed between Jack Cun ningham with 17 points, Bumgar ner and Warren with 12 and Rhodes with 6. Buchanan was high for the losers with 10. Bob Tate's field goal in the last second of play capped a thrilling climax on an exciting game here tonight and provided a 44-42 victory fo rthe Catamounts of Western Carolina over Atlantic Christian as the two clubs squared off iirthe first of a two game series. With seconds remaining Bar ney Barnhorst stole the ball in mid court and fired over to Tate on the sideline at the foul stripe. Tate loosed a one hander which bounc ed off the rim of the basket, but the wily Catamount forward sped across the foul stripe, recovered his own rebound and, leaping high into the air, flipped in the game winning goal. The boys won by a 42-29 score and the girls by 22-13. In the boys game, Clyde Bum garner led the attack with 15 points. Baldy Cagle and Darnel Ward were the outstanding floor men for Sylva but Cunningham, Evans, Jones and Pressley came in for their share of the honors. Estes was high for the girls with 11 points while Tubby hit all 13 for the girls. The victories came as part of the climax of one of the most suc cessful seasons enjoyed by Sylva teams in a long while. Coach Tuck McConnell's Western Caro lina Catamounts loosed their mountain magic on Atlantic Chris tian's cagers here tonight ar?id rol led to a tuneful 57-46 victory in their last North State conference j battle of the current season. The I victory gave the Catamounts a 7 7 record in conference play and was their 15th win against nine losses this year with one more game to go. An overflow crowd of 1,000 or more watched the Catamounts ring up an early 11-2 lead with Veo Rhodes showing the way. The ACC men finally settled down and found the range. They began whacking at the Catamount lead until, at halftime, the Cats held a three point 29-26 margin. But that was as close as they got. Tate, Rhodes and McGinn burned the nets from everywhere as they counted for I all but 13 of the Catamount's 57 I points. On the backboards, Barney Barnhorst and Burt Lane were supreme and on defense they were impassable. The Catamounts could not be stopped.
