Mr. and Mrs. Willie Lowe, of Winston-Salem, spent last week end here with Mrs. Lowe's father, Dr. W. A. Sams, and Mrs. Sams. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Martin of Conway, S. C, and Mr. and Mrs. John Roberson of Taylorsville spent the week-end here with the mother of Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Roberson, Mrs. William Worley, and family; and also visited Mr. and Mrs. Guy White. Mrs. N. T. Elkins Sr., her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs- N. T. Elkins Jr., and two children of Jenkins, Ky., spent the week-end as guests of Mr. and Mrs. El wood Waldrup and Mr. and Mrs. Forester Grimes. Mrs. Waldrup and Mr. Grimes are the niece and brother, respectively, c.f Mrs. N. T. Elkins Sr. With The Sick Talmage Mclcnn, popular local Imrber, is a patient in Oteen Hos pital where he is undergoing ob servation and treatment. Mrs. Gordon Rice has been eon fined to her home this week due to illness. Mrs. J. Moody Chandler was ad mitted to St. Joseph's Hospital Wednesday where she will under go surgery today (Thursday). MethodUt WSCS Met Sunday With McElroys Here Members of the Woman's So ciety of Christian Service of the Marshall Methodist Church held their annual Christmas Party Sunday afternoon at the home of Dr. and Mrs. J. L. McElroy, with the entire membership of the church aa guests. A Christmas program was pre sented by the church's Youth Fellowship organization. Gifts were exchanged and re freshments served. An auto mobile and a cabin cruiser col lided near here, when the boat's controls jammed and it jumped out of Guntersville Lake. The boat struck a highway causeway and bounced partly onto the road. An automobile, with two passengers, truck the boad and one of the passengers was seriously injured. Vota Vita Class Christmas Party Next Tuesday The annual Christmas Party of the Vota Vita Sunday School Class of the Marshall Baptist Church will be held Tuesday evening at 8 o'clock in the home of Mrs. Earl Robinson. Mrs. James Story will have charge of the program. JE. Leake, Jr. Scholarship At University Arthur Eldridge Leake Jr., of Marshall has been named a recip ient of an Avalon Foundation Scholarship at the University of North Carolina School of Medi cine. He is a second-year medical stu dent, a member of the 1966 grad uating class. UNC medical students this year have been awarded nearly $45,000 in scholarships. Ninety-five of the students, including Mr. Leake, were selected by the Medical Stu dent Aid Committee. Mr. Leake is the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Leake of Rt. 4, Marshall. This scholarship fund is made possible by the Avalon Foundation of New York City through a gfit CO me uiNV ocnwi wl It pays to advertise thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Jim Mclntyre for "answering" the advertisement in last week's issue concerning the Life Magazine Jim brought me a copy the next day also wish to thank the others who of fered me their copies it just happened that my subscription ex pired with that particular issue I've since renewed don't remember getting a notice about the expiration but guess I just overlooked it unexpected things happen so often, don't they? - Saturday night I attended the WNC Press meeting at the S6W, as usual, and after the meet ing I started down the steps from the Club Room when Skip and "Chee-Chcc" came out of the Green Room where they were at tending a Christmas Party of the Biltmore Baptist Church Sunday School they asked me to play the piano for the party we had quite a time with "Name the Tune" and I enjoyed meeting the many nice men and women from the BBC wish we had had more time maybe we can do it again sometime - am also 'looking forward to playing the piano next Saturday night at the SW where I've been asked to ' "entertain'' members of t h e Beverly Hills Baptist Church choir and BTI ' and speaking of music, I really enjoyed the fine organ music by "Tom" Corbett Sunday at the MBC Marie lEads sang "Cradle Song" gosh, ishe sings that, song beautifully I always did like it and the sermon by Bob Bruhn was fine, too was glad to see Bill Ram sey out again last Friday night Marshall really looked "business like" with practically all the stores open till 8:30 o'colck although business may not have been of the "landslide" type, there were several people trading I'll bet business is better this Friday night and still better on Fri day night, Dec. 20 1 enjoyed visiting several places Friday night and looking over Christmas merchandise and just talking and listening wee over to Oteen Hospital Sunday afternoon to visit my old buddy, Talmage McLean when I arrived at his room and looked in, he was peace fully sleeping and looked too com fortable to disturb I wrote a little note and left him snoozing hope he's soon able to re- Mrs. Dean Rigsby Is Honored With Household Shower Mrs. Camay Ramsey Jr., and Miaa BUM Jean Bedmon were hostesses for a household shower given for Mrs. Dean Rigsby, at the REA Building Saturday night. Games were played and prises were awarded to Miss Shirley 1'arris, Miss Susie McCurry, snd Mrs. Dean Rigsby. The honorse then opened the many beautiful and useful gifts, after which refreshments were served to the guests. Miss Shir ley Parris presided at the punch bowl. Mrs. John Hough Presents Program In Mars Hill Mrs. John Hough presented a program entitled "Christmas in North Carolina," at the meeting SUIT AGAINST OFFICIALS IS NON-SUITED A $500,000 civil damages suit filed nearly three years ago by former University of North Car olina law student James R Vos burgh of Durham against Madi son County Sheriff E. Y. Ponder and Madison election officials has been non-suited and dismissed. A judgment to that effect, signed by U. S. Dietrict Judge J. B. Craven, was filed with U. S. District Clerk Tom Rhodes in Asheville Wednesday. Name(d with Ponder as co -defendants in the suit were B. K. Meadows, precinct registrar at Upper Spring Creek Township No. 8, Wayne Norris, Veetie Worley and Wade Payne. The suit, filed originally on Jan. 23, 1961 in Greensboro, and later transferred to Asheville, charged that Voeburgh had been malicious ly arrested and imprisoned on false charges. It asked $250.00g actual and $250,000 punitive dam ages. Wednesday's action came upon recommendation of the plaintiff. Vosburgh had alleged that at the time of his arrest he was ob serving voting at the Upper Spring Crock precinct during the general election of Nov. 8, I960. Vosburgh in his original petition said that he was a member of the Federation of Young Repub licans. During the December I960, term of Madison County Superi or Court, a grand jury indicted Vosburgh on a charge of imper sonating an SBI agent during the election. The charges were nol pressed in Superior Court the fol lowing July. of the Mars Hill Woman's Club Thursday, Dec. 12, at 8 p. m., in the Community Club House.
