No man, he soon realized, can comprehend tru ly the message of the Gospel if he lacks food, shelter and warm clothing. There and then, William Booth found his destiny. With his wife, Catherine, he started bringing "Sou)), Soap and Salvation" to these abandoned people of poverty. It was not an easy task, nor a popular task. Victorian England consid ered poverty the result of criminality or laziness and "respectable" citizens and churches frowned at the Booths' early "meddling" in the slums. But the,y persevered. With music in the streets they attracted crowds; then they preached to them, gradually gain ing converts, supporters and, in time, a mission hall The missions fame spread, became a "Volunteer Ar my" of converted working people. Booth crossed out "volunteer," substituted "Salvation" and thereupon he became General Booth, Commander of the Salva tion Army. Women as well as men donned uniforms. 'Military organization and terminology prevailed and a huge Army was grouped to work for God and good. Since those early days, the Salviation Army has marched into 71 nations and territories, has preached in 147 languages. All over the globe it has fed the hungry, sheltered the homeless, founded hos pitals, residences, centers for alcoholics, institutes for the blind, and rescue homes for women. Truly in a hundred years of devotion to the needs of mankind, it has proved itself, as is so often said "a servant to all." ' Dife;i JL,3J .jm. It has also been described as "Heart to God and Hand to Man." This being reflected directly and in directly in the lines of people throughout our fifty states to say nothing of the rest of the world. Outstanding "salutes" of tributes have been pub lished in newspapers, other national literature and over the air in radio and television programs through out this year. Major Louise Baldry, commanding officer for the Salvation Army in Hot Springs is a third genera tion Salvationist as her paternal grandmother was a "soldier" or member of the Salvation Army in Cardiff, Wales, during the days of the Army's be ginning. The Major was a personal friend of Major Cecil Brown and rode the circuit through mountains of this area long before Major Brown had erected buildings for the Army in which to worship. As the "Maid of the Mountains," the Major received Inter national and National acclaim. She was one of the few women of the world on whom the Order of the Founder was bestowed. This was the outcome of her dedicated services performed here in these moun tains where she was raised. It is because of the un tiring services of the "Major Browns" throughout the world that such sentiments as an early Army song-writer penned could be proclaimed: "All round the world The Army chariot rolls, All round the world The Lord is saving souls. All round the world Our soldiers will be brave. We'll keep our Army banners waving All round the world!" 4tK OF JULY DRIVING Take it easy when you're driving over the Fourth tf July week-end so that you don't go off with a bang and become one of the 18 victims who the N. C. State Motor Club warns will be kilted in traffic accidents on North Carolina's streets and highways during the holiday period. The state will count its July Fourth holiday highway fatalities from 6 p. m, FridJay, July 2, through Monday, July 5, a 78-hour period. For the same period last year, North Carolina's traffic toll climbed to 17 persons killed and 666 others injured in 951 accidents. Leading driver violations that contributed to the accidents were: speeding, 222; drove left of center, 155; reckless driving, 112; failed to yield right of way, 108; following too closely, 100; and under the influence of alcohol, 68. "We hope that safe driving practices will re duce the toll of 18 deaths indicated by previous holi day experiences coupled with currant driving pat terns," said Thomas B. Wstkin president of the motor club and the National Automobile Associa tion. "Just remember that traffic congestion aver ages three times normal on national holiday week ends and that your chances of becoming involved in an accident increase accordingly." Murrey, French Breed Chevrolet Co, Inc., Marshall, has been reappointed to serve his ninth term es Area Chairman of the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association for Madison County, according to an announcement made today by NCADA President W. A. Raney of Wilmington. Murrey will act ea liaison officer between new car and track dealers in Madison County snd NCADA and the Na tional Automobile Dealers Associa tion. Murray will keep his area in formed of state and national af fairs affecting the automobile in dustry and, in turn, will advise the state and national associations of happenings of interest on the local scene.
