(Photos by Jim Story) Patriots Prep For Football Season Alter a week of light work outs, the Patriots of Madison High put their pads oa last Monday and began heavy workouts in preparation for their scrimmage game tonight (Thursday) Coach McFee stated that "we have a real good positive and optimistic attitude about the season. All of these young men are showing a lot of desire, dedication, and determination. They know what it takes to win." Coach McFee has also been pi eased with the amount of work his assistants are putting into the program. "Coaches Perry Sanderson and Roger Haynie have been doing an excellent job with our line. Both have a lot of enthusiasm and are working very well with the team," stated Coach McFee Coach Sanderson and Coach Haynie commented on their charges. "Our interior linesmen look very im pressive. We have had a lot of hustle during this first week of practice and the team has shown much enthusiasm. We do not have the depth that we would like to have but with a minimum of injuries we feel the players can carry the load." I Presently heading up the offensive unit are Sidney Hunter, Tommy DuVall, Bobby Jack Chandler, David Long, Jackie Bishop, Robert Ponder, Ricky Hoyle, and an asset to any line at 6'5" and 325 pounds, Ricky Ingram. "Several sophomores are looking very good and we hope to give them a chance to gain game experience this year. Some of them are Dewayne Maxwell, Mike Baldwin, Tim Met calf, and Jeff Merrill. All in all we have been very pleased with the attitude and determination our boys have shown this past week," McFee said. Coach McFee was also pleased with the development of the receivers under Coach GeraldPrice. "Hehashada lot of experience with the defensive secondary and this aids him in showing our receivers how best to run and block against them." Coach Price commented on the receivers. "At tight end seniors Mike Cody and Kevin Kent are working remarkably well. Junior John Chandler also promises to give extra strength to this position. Working at split end are senior John Deaver and sophomore Harvey Franklin. All have been working hard, but Deaver's experience given him some edge at the split end Tight Bad Mike Cody has ao far shown the determination and effort that indicate he may give an excellent performance this season." The backs are being coached by Jack Brown who is doing a fine job with them. He, along with the whole staff, wants the kids to win very much. Coach Brown had this to say about the ball carriers. "At quarterback, Steve Wood is the number one prospect, but Scotty Proffitt and Holden Nix are improving He baa the move*, the throwing ability, and the intelligence needed at this position. Scotty started late but is coming on quickly as is sophomore Holden Nix." He also stated. "The team will be strong in rtmning backs. No one has a position sown up at this time There are six backs who have a chance at starting. At fullback, David Carter and Jerry Ramsey are neck and neck Both run hard, with David ahead in blocking and Jerry in open field running " Both Randy Hodge and Ricky Ingle have a chance to start at tailback Randy seems to be running harder at this time. Roger Ball may also find work at this posit km Gene Clark and Alan English are running for )he L Back position. Both are powerful ball carriers and each has his own style. According to Coach McFee things are beginning to shape up He is expecting around 10 to JO more young men to try out for football this week Coach McFee concluded. "We are going to take each day as it comes and work on the fun damentals and techniques We are working slowly but surely to improve with each prac tice." Waynesville. as backfietd coach, it was reported this week. River Improvement Discussed James T. Ledford, chairman of the Madison County Board of Commissioners, was among the officials of the Land-of-Sky Regional Council who attended Hayes Run 4-H Club Holds Meet By MARK RECTOR Reporter 'Hie Hayes Run 4-H Club held its regular monthly meeting Aug. 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the homeofMrs. Earl Wise. Warren Wise presided over the meeting in the absence of the president. The first order of old business was duscussion of the 4-H Congress. This year the club had seven out of the eight delegates attending from Madison County. Billy Duvall gave the club a report on the 4-H County Picnic, held recently. Plans were made for our club picnic to Sliding Rock and also for the county fair. Also discussed was how the 4-H'ers who did demonstrations could raise money for a trip to Carowinds. a meeting in Knoxville, Tenn . recently with the board of directors of Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The purpose of the meeting was to enable the officials of four WNC counties to explain the status of the River Improvement Program involving the French Broad River. Points discussed included problems, solutions, etc., as flood and erosion prevention, clean-up activities and recreation development. The following letter to Aubrey Wagner, chairman, board of directors, TVA, from William M. Ives, chairman Land-of-Sky Regional Council, is self-explanatory: I take this opportunity to express the appreciation of the Lalnd-of-Sky Regional Council, its member governments and stuff for the time and hospitality which was ex tended to our delegat ion by (he TVA board and staff on Aug. 6. I feel that our objectives of informing the TVA board of our River Improvement Program and demonstrating our commitment to the program were realized. In addition, those who attended the meeting from Region B enjoyed the opportunity to see the TVA perspective on the program. I believe the Aug. 6 meeting marks the beginning of a new and exciting partnership between our region and the Tennessee Valley Authority, which offers the opportunity to jointly demonstrate how a unique natural resource like the French Broad River can be protected and improved so as to realize its maximum potential. I look forward to this undertaking and to a continued harmonious working relationship with the TVA board and staff."
