Queen, county su perintendent of public welfare, has returned from the National Wel fare conference which was held last week in Washington, D. C. Mrs. Queen reports that the dis cussions relative o the merit sys tems of welfare workers, now in operation in several of the states, took a major part of the program. The merit system, which requires (that all workers stand an exami nation and be placed under cixil service has bein approved for North Carolina by the Federal So cial Security Board. The examinations, according to Mrs, Queen are now being assem bled and will be given the North Carolina social workers the latter part of January.
