NEW YORK Recently contro versy over the sire of New York city's rats threatened to reopen here this week after Long Island police had reported an attack by a giant rodent on a 15-year-old school girl, which left her bleed ing and suffering from fear and shock. Ann Kheehan. of 116-03 14th road, Whitestone, was the victim in an incident which has few parallels in police record. She ap peared home recently in a hysteri cal state and with blood dripping from a gash in her leg. In answer to her mother's in quiries, she described how she had been walking along 23rd avenue, near 121st street, when the giant rat attacking without provocation leaped from tall weeas in a 101 and sprang at her. The animal, according to police accounts, sank its teeth into her left leg as the girl fought to shake it loose and screamed for help. A blow from Ann's fist finally dis engaged the animal, which disap peared into the lot. Gets Quick Treatment At home the wound was found bad enough to require emergency attention. A Flushing interne dressed it, and then ordered the girl to bed to recover from shock. Meanwhile. New York reporters had new material for renewal of a recent verbal campaign against the city s rats. After repeated references, au thorities stepped in with a flat disclaimer, declaring that rats never average more than three quarters of a pound in weight. Encyclopediac sources list the average length of rats at eight inches, not counting the tail. Chief danger of the rat, it is pointed out ,js not from bites, but from the fleas which it carries and which are known to be the source of bubonic plague. Two-way Plan Last week reports from Atlanta. Ga., told of a two-fold extermina tion plan now being used privately in cities throughout the state which is designed to kill the fleas as well as the rats. DDT powder dusted along rat runs kills the fleas, ac cording to this plan, while the rats are being dealt with through more powerful poison doses. Manv other Amreican cities likewise were seeking methods of dealing with rat hordes multiplied by the inattention of the war pe riod. Encyclopediac sources point out that thse worst instance of rat nlnffue on recent record occurred in Turkev in 1931.
