PAGE EIGHT Second Snap Shots Of The HUMAN SIDE OF LIFE -By- , FRANCES GILBERT FRAZIER Despite the flurries of snow and the cold biting winds, we know that spring is just waiting for her cue to make her, entrance upon the stage of Today, so it behooves us to get ourselves nicely settled on the front row . . . and open our programs. According to all traditions, spring time means spring clean ing ... so off we go to the attic, amply fortified with all the nec essary paraphernalia for doing a thorough job. We always start in the attic and work down thereby saving ourselves the ad ditional task of cleaning up the dust from the floor abce. Have you ever noticed that when you start out to do a good job and get thoroughly organized with the idea, about the second thins you lay your hand upon is a bunch of old letters, an ancient photograph album filled with snap shots, etc., or a book of memories? Well, it was a book of "home savers" that we landed on and, naturally, we sat down to "glance" over it. Every page held a hint for housekeeping that had helped us over many a tight place in days gone by. For gotten was the spring cleaning . . . we hustled down stairs knowing that you would appreciate a few of these suggestions. Such as: "A safe way to pick up small particles of broken glass." Sweep the broken glass into as small a pile as possible, then saturate a double sheet of newspaper with water and drop the extended soaking paper over the accumulated glass. Press down carefully and scoop up the whole thing. The glass will ad here to the paper and there will be no cut fingers. About eleven in the morning, the telephone rings and you hear that Jennie and Lillie are stopping by for lunch, between buses. You select a large baking potato, one for each, and parboil for about ten minutes, or until potatoes are half done. This saves time and fuel. Your oven will finish the baking process and you will then break open the cooked potatoes, scoop out the contents, mix with butter (or substitute), a bit of minced I Troubles Of Policyholders Weird Funny And Pathetic, Insurance Officials Reveal BOSTON There's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip, and claims examiners in Hartford. Conn., the insurance capital of the world, never cease wondering over I the weird ways a policyholder can I get into trouble. Take the case of the hurrying motorist, for example. He screech ed his automobile to a stop and dashed out on the run. Then he slipped on a chunk of ice and dis appeared into an open sewer. Then there Is Ine motorist who ! was digging his car out of a snow-1 4:rt ri. i . .... Those are just two of the claims paid off last year by insurance companies in Hartford. Another one that puzzled the ad justers concerned the "old grad" who was showing the college foot ball team how they used to tackle in his day. Season well and return to shell, grate cheese over this and return to oven to thoroughly heat and brown. Serve with a fruit cocktail, green tossed salad, toasted bread sticks, and coffee or tea. Your disposition will be tranquil and you will have had time to en joy your guests. We simply couldn't keep house without newspapers ... in every sense of the word. Therefore this item: before starting any operation in the kitchen, lay three or four sheets of news paper on your work-table and work over them. When each task is completed, gather up the top sheet of paper, roll and put in garbage can. Your next sheet is ready and your table cleared with no mess to handle. Oh, oh! How well we remember this suggestion. We had a nice set of shelves built in the pantry but the space was too limited for doors that would be in the way when opened. What did we do? We bought us a nice tan window shade, hung it exactly as though it covered a window and when our use of the shelves was over for the day. down came the shade. We painted an attractive bunch of flow ers on the shade so it was orna mental, but a decorative colored picture pasted on could be used. . Here's an idea for running fresh curtains on a metal rod to save curtains and temper. Put a piece of adhesive tape over the metal tip that runs through the top of the curtains. It will pull off easily (no harm, to leave it on) when curtains are ready for hanging. Want something different? And a time-saver, too. Cut crusts from slice of bread and cut round hole in middle of slice. Put bread in frying pan with butter (or substi tute) and as bread begins to brown, drop lresh egg into center. It will be sufficiently cooked to turn with bread. You'll be surprised how different an egg will taste in such well-bread company. There's a bunch more Ideas in our book. Want to hear some more . . . some time? the tackling dummy but forgot the metal pencil in his pocket. He stabbed himself. One day, little Junior saw a buz zing near his mother's ear. Junior, who believed in getting things done, picked up a fly swatter and swung at the insect knocking his mother dizzy. The insurance men still are chuckling over the one about the policyholder who dropped into his neighborhood tavern for a quiet drink. He was beaten up with a frozen turkey leg wielded by a drunk. Then, there's the horseman who ate his meals off the mantel for a week. Seems he bent over to pick up something and his horse couldn't resist the temptation, so he nipped him. But the payorr in the insurance world during the past year was furnished by an insurance agent. The agent was earnestly explain ing to a prospective policyholder that someone might fall on his property and be hurt. As he talked, the agent backed into an iron pipe and broke two ribs. However, the call paid off. The agent sold the policy before start ing for the hospital. Shoe Bepair You will find that prompt repair ing keeps a new look on your shoes.
