The Everyday Life of a People HIGHLIGHTS ON THE SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON By NEWMAN CAMPBELL . (The International Uniform Lsson on the above topic for March 17 is Ruth, the Memory v Verse being Hebrews 13:2. or-jft-t not to show love unto strang ers.") ' NOW IT came to pass In the days when the judges ruled, that there was a famine in the land. And a certain man of Bethlehem Judah went to sojourn In the coun try of Moab, and his wife, and his wo sons. "And the name of the man was Elimelech, and the "name of his wife Naomi, and the name of his two sons, Mahlon and Chilion." In time Elimelech died, and left l;Ls wife and two sons The sons t'rew up and married Moabite vomen, the name of one being Orpah, and the other Ruth. Ten years later both sons died, and 5-Jaomi decided to go back to Beth lehem, and told her daughters-in-iaw to return to their own people. The three started out together, but at last Naomi said to the oth ers: "Go, return each to your mother's house: the Lord deal kindly with you. as ye have dealt with the dead, and with me. "The Lord grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband." Then she kissed them and all wept. Both asked Naomi if they should not go with her. but she said why should they? She would have no more sons, and If she had the women would not care to wait to marry until they were grown; so she ad vised them to go to their own for rrer homes. Orpah kissed her and vent; but Ruth refused. She said, 'Intreat me not to leave thee, or t." return from following after u".ee: for whither thou goest, I will ;o; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my peo ple, and thy God my God: "Where thou diest, will I die, nd there will I be burled: the Lord do so to me, and more also, if ught but death part thee and me." Two Go Together So Ruth and Naomi went to Bethlehem together, and when Naomi's former friends saw her coming they asked, "Is this Naomi?" but she answered sadly, "Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me." The name Naomi meant pleasant, and Mara meant bitter. Naomi had a "kinsman, a "mighty man of wealth," whose name waa Boaz. Ruth, not know ing this, told Naomi she would go out Into the fields and glean after the reapers that they might have food. Naomi agreed, and Ruth went to Boaz' field and gleaned. Boaz came to the field to greet his workers, saying, "The Lord be with you," to which they an swered, "The Lord bless thee." Then Boaz saw the girl and' In gaged in a study course each night at 7:30, Monday through Friday. Wednesday night belongs to the church. Come to this mid-week service at 7:30 and hear Caiaphas, the man who plotted the death of Jesus, tell his story in his nwn words. This service will be held in the main auditorium to make room for the growing crowd. FIRST METHODIST CHURCH Rev. Paul W. Townsend, pastor. Church school opens at 10:00 o'clock, M. H. Bowles, superintend ent. Sunday morning worship service at 11:00. At this service we are observing "Family Sunday." We are asking that every family be present with 100 per cent at tendance, each family sitting to gether as a group. There will be a special story for the children and a sermon on "Family Religion." We ex pect this to be one of the best serv ices of the year. The Methodist "Youth Fellowship meets Sunday night at 6:30. An interesting program is being plan ned with special music; and there will be a Bible quiz based on the book of Genesis. Come and match your wits with the other young people, after reading the first book Of the Bible.' ' AflultS Who wish to Boaz went to the city gate and waited for the kinsman who waa hearer to Naomi than himself and told him he would buy the land which would have been Naomi's husband's, and also re deem Ruth and wed ber. quired about her. and was told she was a Moabite, the widow of Naomi's son. who had ccme with Naomi. Boaz told her to glean with his maidens, he instruct ed his young men not to mo lest her. and when she was hun gry she should eat with his people and she would be welcome. She thanked him much for his kind ness and told her mother-in-law about it, and Naomi said, "It is good." She then told Ruth that Boaz was a near kinsman. The events occurring that night, when Ruth day at the feet of Boaz. were perfectly innocent, ac cording to that day, but are a lit tle difficult for us to understand. In the morning. Boaz told Ruth to bring her vail and he filled it with six measures of barley and sent her home. When she told Naomi, she said, "Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day " Boaz wanted to redeem the im poverished Naomi and her daughter-in-law, Ruth, but there was a nearer kinsman who had the privi lege of doing It if he wished, ac cording to the law of Moses, the levirate law. Boaz sat at the city gate next morning to wait for this kinsman, and hailed him when he came Boaz stated the case and the kinsman confessed, "I cannot redeem it for myself lest I mar my own inheritance; redeem thou my right to thyself, for I cannot re deem it." That made Boaz' part clear and he proceeded to do what he most wanted to buy back from those who possessed it. the property which Naomi's family had lost, and marry Ruth, as this marriage would "raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance." The redemption pledge was witnessed by ten elders whom Boaz had gathered together, and all said to Boaz, "We are wit nesses The Lord make the woman that is come into thine house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house 'of Israel." "So Boaz took Ruth, and she was his wife," and the Lord gave them a son, and the women neighbors who were with Naomi, said. "Blessed be the Lord, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel' Naomi took the child In her arms, and these same women gave him the name "Obed," and h'e became the father of Jesse and David, and eventually of Jesus through his mother, who was de scended from David. This charming story of the lov ing girl, Ruth, her mother-in-law, and the kindly, honest man of God, Boaz, shows how the ordi nary people lived, not in the con fusion, lawlessness and crime of the book of Judges and Samuel, but with lovine: kindness and equity. attend will receive a warm wel come.
