National Glory and Decay HIGHLIGHTS ON THE SUNDA 7 SCHOOL LESSON By NEWMAN CAMPBELL (The International Uniform Lesson on the above topic for April 27 is II Samuel 5; 9; I Kings 1-11, the Memory Verse being Ephesians 4:32, ''Be ye kind one to another.") "NOW DAVID was old and stricken in years," the first book, of Kings begins. Most of th events In King Davids life are recorded in first and second Samuel. Now he is about to die and a new chapter to be written in the history of the Jewish peo plea story of Israel in its great est glory. Before we begin this new chap ter in Jewish history, however, we must mention one episode tit the life of King David. "David made inquiries about survtvori of his friend Jonathan, Salul's ion and his dear friend. Ziba. A ser vant of Saul, told bim of one. son who had been but five, yeara old, when his father was HUle.d, tnd David sent for hini. His name, was Mephlbosheth, a.nd he waa 'lame on his feet." He was brought to the king who gave him back Saul's family' lands, and told Ziba that h should manage them for Mephlbo sheth, and receive in return a part of the proceeds. He also told Mephibosheth that he should eat always at the king's table. Solomon, whom David had named to succeed him, was not the oldest son, so Adonijah, his older brother, decided he would be the next ruler. He consulted with Joab and Abiathar, the priest, and they helped him. David knew nothing of this until Nathan, the prophet, came to Bethsheba, Solomon's mother, and told her to go to David and in form him. and as!: that her son, Solomon, should at once be pro claimed kir.g to displace Adoni jah. Bathsheba went to the king and reminded him that he had sworn that Solomon should be king in his place, as the Lord wished. David called In Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet, and told them to take Solomon, place him on the klng'a own mule and take him to Gihoh, and there anoint him king of Israel and Judal. Solomon Anointed It was done as David directed and the people accepted Solomon as their king, crying. "God ave Solomon!" And they rejoiced greatly. There waa nothing, for Adonijah to do but submit, but eventually he was killed at the command 'of Solomon and also. e-yiers who had; Joined, hini. - SUtrlkatM by Xiof In his WeS away hll'lt Ian lit I n i n M KM 1 !: Y Millions Of British Swear Oil' Smoking LONDON '.P' llrilon liv Ihe miliums swore oil' siuokine. on April Hi, and made the round', ol the tobacco shuns for a final nico- tine binge helore new hivhcl in j history prices went into eM'ecl I ru(iimiing the 17lh. Chancellor of the Kxcluquei Hugh Dalton who caused the price hike by raising the duty on 1 1 1 1 - ' ported tobacco in order lo cut 'dollar spending was scolded by such diverse newspapers as the ! sedate Manchester Guardta and. 1 the Communist Dailv Worker, i King Solomon went to Giheon to sacrifice there, and in a dream the Lord came to him and said, "Ask what I shall give thee." Solomon said, "O Lord, my God, Thou hast made Thy servant king instead of David, my father: and I ara but a little child; I know not how to go out and come in . . . Give therefore Thy ser vant an understanding heart to judge my people, that I may dis cern between good and bad: f .r who 13 able to judge this Thy so great a people?" The Lord was pleased with Solomon's request, and said it should be granted. Shortly after this came two women to Solomon and said each had, given birth to a child, and. one of the little ons had died. One accused the mother of the dead child of taking her own live baby from her while she slept and, putting the dead one in her arms. She wanted her own baby back. The other denied the charge. The king said, "Bring me a sword." It was brought and the king said, "Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other." Then the real mother said, "O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it." But tho other said, "Let It be neither mine nor thine, but divide It." "Then the king answered and said, "Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the . mother thereof." All Israel heard ' of this judgment and rejoiced in the wisdom of their king. Peace in Israel These were days of peace in Israel, and King Solomon became very wealthy. With the help of the King of Tyre, he built the great temple, the Ark of the Lord was placed therein, and God hallowed it. But alas for Solomon! He "loved many strange women, Ammonites, Edmonites, Zidonians and Hittitea." In his old age they turned him away from God to worship thejr strange deities. The Lord was angry and said to Solo mon, "Forasmuch as this is done of thee, and thou hast not kept My covenant, and My statutes, which I have, commanded thee, I will surely rend the, kingdom from thee, and will give it to thy servant." However, the Lord said also that He would not do it in Solo mon's time, but after his death the kingdom would be divided. Thus started all Israel's troubles because Solomon did not follow in his father steps and was dis loyal to the Lord who had done so much for him and. hU people. rttturo apiateat, lac, age ;l 1 a 1 Ills on allowed his many tribes to wean I t;ia'ice t. laid, and he fiv thiir f;oil-s and sai nfli eit hetol e thelll SI': Kpheslans 4 . hlf.ll I'l ' .iiul v hr.
