Rayna and Mrs. Joseph Emerson Rose, at her home Saturday after noon. The event marked the 94th birthday anniversary of the hon orce. The residence was arranged with quantities of spring flowers, many of which were sent by friends. Mrs. Smathers was also the recipient of many gifts and messages from friends and relatives. Assisting the hostesses in receiv ing and serving were Mrs. Francis Massie, Mrs. Douglas Edwards, and Mrs. James Kllpatrick, grand daughters of Mrs. Smathers, Mrs. Jack Elwood, Mrs. John Smathers, and Mrs. R. Mrs. Smathers, widow of Dr. Smathers, prominent dentist, is a native of the Jonathan Creek sec tion of Haywood County. She is the daughter of the late D. Col lins Howell, a pioneer Methodist minister, and Morning Garrett Howell, and is a granddaughter of Henry Howell, one of the early set- i tiers of Haywood County. She is the mother of Judge Frank Smathers of Miami, of Senator William Smathers of Atlantic City, and of Dr. John H. Smathers of Waynesville and of Mrs. Rayne, Mrs. Rose, and Mrs. Jack Holtz claw of Waynesville. Cecil Home Club Meets With Mrs. Frazier The Cecil Home Demonstration Club met last Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. A. M. Frazier with the vice-president. Mrs. H. Reece, presiding. The demonstration on "Furni- ( ture Ararngement" was given by Miss Mary Margaret Smith. Mrs. Gus Reiger, of Cnicago, daughter of the hostess, was a spe cial guest and told the members how she had given her friends and neighborc in Chicago many of the ideas she had received from the club. Project leaders reporting were Mrs. Ronny Allison. Mrs. Jim Reeves, Mrs. J. H. Reece, Mrs. Edgar Burnette, Mrs. Reiger, and Mrs. Frazier. Local Girls Go To Greensboro For Girls' State Miss Mozelle Liner and Miss Dorothy Norris left yesterday morning to attend the annual Tar Heel Girls' State to be held in Greensboro this week. Both girls are members of the rising senior class of the Waynes ville high school and will join around 200 other girls from all over the state to go through a training course on government at the Woman's College. They will visit Raleigh and other government centers during the week. The Girls' State is sponsored by the North Carolina American Le gion Auxiliary and Miss Liner and Miss Norris were selected by the faculty of the high school to rep resent the local chapter of the aux iliary. Miss Liner is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hardy Liner of Rat- cliffe Cove and Miss Norris is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. T. C. Norris. MR.
