The local citizens opened their pocketbooks and hearts in order to provide a Christmas cheer for these families which include 106 destitute persons. Many children will be clothed and given toys by Santa Claus tonight and the cup boards of the homes will be filled for the first time this year. The Christmas season is well depicted in these kind ges tures by local citizens to prSvIde the necessities for the underprivileged families in the county. One elderly wo man, with five dependent children, dropped by the local office to express appreciation for the gifts as tears of joy trickled down her cheek. "Who says there is not a Santa Claus" who lives in this community, with the beauty of the Christmas season ex emplified in this unselfish service to those less fortunate, which is the true spirit of the Yuletide season. Cnurr C. It is one of our greatest need-:, and liovirnir Cherry will long he re membered for this project " Wayne C o r p r n I n r president Chamber of Commerce: "This is the best news we could hope to icl for Christmas. All of Western North Carolina will benefit by this road, and we are most happy that Governor Cherry allocated the money with which to start this im portant link in our highway sys tem." George A. Brown, Jr., county manager: "For many years we have looked on the road to Newport as an important link in the develop ment of a large part of Haywood county. Not only will it open up the central section of the county, but it will piovide a standard farm-to-market road to the Tennessee markets for our thousands of farm ers. Governor Cherry's allocation of $450,000 for this important highway is the first step towards a new day for this phase of Hay wood's development." Jonathan Woody, president First National Bank: "This is a road I think every citizen in this entire section had rather see built than any other. It will mean more to wards the development of this section in several respects. ,11 will give us another outlet for our farm products, ami Rive our visitors from the mid-west a water-level route into the mountain area. "In my opinion this is one of the biggest things for Haywood and area that has happened in many years. It in evident that Gov ernor Cherry -thinks well of liny wood and all Western North Caro lina." Charles E. Ray, chairman oif the N. C. Park Commission: "The an nouncement of the allocation of $450,000 toward the construction of a road through the Pigeon Val ley is the most welcome Christmas gift that Uaywood county could re ceive. I commend Governor Cher ry, D. Reeves Noland and all olhcr ofTiciuls of the state, for their for ward looking action. Personally it makes mo very happy because I know that the construction of the road has been wanted for so long by so many people who acclaimed its justification but were unable to secure its adoption. "The importance of this road is both local and national. From a lo cal point of view it will permit full development df the southern half of Haywood county. As an in direct effect it will result in the improvement of all connecting roads. Following the road will come electric and telephone lines.
