Caldwell was hostess for the March meeting of the Iron Duff Home Demonstration club which was held on Friday after noon. Mrs. Lois Long presided. Reports of club projects were given by leaders as follows: cloth ing, Mrs. J. R. Caldwell; home beautification, Mrs. T. C. Davis; poultry, Mrs. Harley Bryson; gar dens, Mrs. Fannie Davis; family life, Mrs. H. R. Caldwell; and crafts, Mrs. Lois Long. Miss Mary Margaret Smith gave a demonstration ori Beter Break fasts," after which refreshments were served. Three new members were wel comed intd the club as follows: Mrs. Frank Davis, Mrs. Manson Medford and Mrs. T. J. Medford. Mrs. Braren Is New Sorority Pr e s i d e ri t Mrs. Herbert Braren was elected new president of the Alpha Theta Chapter of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority at the regular meeting of the group held Thusday evening at the court house. Other officers elected were Miss Edna Summerrow, vice president; Miss Dorothy Richeson, recording secretary; Mrs. Stanley Henry, corresponding secretary; and Miss Thelma Jones, treasurer. Mrs. Harry Lee Liner, Jr., was in charge of the program and gave a talk on "Speech." M"lss Edith Summerrow presided during the business session when plans were made for a series of dances to be held during the com ing summer. Plans for sending a delegate to the state convention of Junior Women's Clubs at Goldsboro in April were discussed and it was decided that one of the ofTicers should represent the local group. A covered dish supper was serv ed prior to the business session. Hostesses were Mesdames Welte, Nicholls and John J. King, and iiiss Hemphill. ATTEND MILITARY BALL m CHARLOTTE Capt. and Mrs. James M. Davis and Lt. and Mrs. Robert H. Win chester spent the week end in Charlotte and attended a military ball which was held in the Char lotte armory auditorium, Saturday night. ' The ball was sponsored by the North Carolina National Guard and seventy four guard units were rep resented. Music was by Blue Baron and his orchestra. Capt. Davis and Lt. Winchester are members of the local 120th anti-tank unit of the National Guard. ACTIVITIES BEN SLOAN, Society Editor- D.A.R. Chapter Holds March Meeting The March meeting of the Dor cas Bell Love Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution was held Friday afternoon at Oak Park with Mrs. S. H. Bushnell and Mrs. J. L. Henderson as hostesses. Mrs. J. W. Killian, regent, pre sided and reported on the si'mipss of the state D.A.R. conference held tnis month in Asheville. She stated that the two flags, a United States flag and a D.A.R. flag, which had been presented to the chapter by Mrs Joseph H. Silversteen of Brev aid, were used at the unvcilim? f the marker at the grave of William foster, Jr., at Newton Cemetery in AMievme. sne also reported that the local chapter furnished the memorial wreath which was used at the conference memorial serv ice, and presented a piece of tap estry to Miss Gertrude Carraway, retiring state regent. Following the memorial service the wreath was presented to Allen Morrison of Asheville to be placed on the grave of his mother, the late Mrs. Theodore Morrison, a former state regent. Others reporting on the State Conference were Mrs. J. H. How ell, Sr., Mrs. J. R. Boyd, and Mrs. Ben Colkitt. Mrs. T. Lenoir Gwyn, chairman of the Good Citizenship Contest, presented Miss Mary Ann Massie, Good Citizenship Pilgrim, who won second place in the state contest. Miss Massie displayed the scrap book, which she had compiled for the event. Mrs. J. H. Howell introduced Miss Allen Hart, senior of the Waynesville High School and char ter member of the Children of the American Revolution, who read a paper on The Constitution of the United States, which she had writ ten for the oratorical contest spon sored by the American Legion. Mrs. W. A. Hyatt, chairman of patriotic education and national de fense, reported that Bob Harry had won the 41st D.A.R.-sponsored declamation contest held at the high school on February 22. Twelve contestants participated in the event. Mrs. Harry Marshall, registrar, reported that Mrs. L. K. Barber had been erceived as a new mem ber. Mrs. Gwyn stated that an ac count of the recent celebration of the 5()th anniversary of the chap ter had been sent to the Historian General in Washington and to the D.A.R. magazine for publication. A record of the event has also been placed in the Haywood County Library. A social hour followed the meet ing. Crabtree P.T.A. To Hold Special Meeting Thurs. The ladies of the Crabtree-Iron Duff Parent Teacher Association will be entertained with a suDDer to be prepared and served by the men of the organization on Thurs day, March 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. All persons hav ing P. T. A. membership cards are invited to attend. Special guests for the occasion will be members of the boys' and girls' basketball teams. The program will include a film of the 1948 out-of-state farm tour and a play by eighth grade stu dents under the direction of Glenn Noland. V Girls' Auxiliary Of Clyde Meet "The True American Beauty" was program topic at Friday's meeting of Junior Girls' Auxiliary of the Clyde Baptist church, at the home of Joretta Medford. Discussion leaders were Janet Francis, Elaine Sanford, Joretta Medford. Glenda Presslev and WpI- da Cashion. Four girls, who received arm bands to signify achievement in memory work, were Lou Ann Os borne. Janet Francis, Joretta Med ford, and Judy Pressly. Nelda Cashion played a piano solo. The hostess and her mother, Mrs. Fred Medford, served refresh ments. Two new members, Mary Jane Greene and Sammy Jean Jackson, were welcomed. R. A.'s Will Meet Wednesday The Junior Royal Ambassadors will meet Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock at the First Baptist church. In its first intercollegiate basket ball came, a 12-11 loss outdoors to Memphis College of Physicians and Surgeons, a Mississippi campus publication attributed defeat to the Two Home Clubs Hold Joint Meeting The Ratcliffe Cove and Fines Creek Home Demonstration clubs held a joint luncheon meeting on last Thursday at the home of Mrs. D. Reeves Noland. Mrs France Rogers, president of the Fines Creek club, presided and the demonstration on "Better Breakfasts," was given by Miss Mary Margaret Smith, home dem onstration agent. Project leaders reporting were Mrs. C. S. Green on gardens, Mrs. C. T. Francis on poultry, Mrs. Cauley Rogers on home beautifi cation, Mrs. R. C. Francis on family life, Mrs. Mark Ferguson on cloth ing, and Mrs. Maggie Grasty on crafts. Following the program the clubs held separate business sessions. Mrs. Hogers presided for the Fines Creek club and Mrs. C. C. Francis presided for the Ratcliffe Cove group. Music Club Meet Is Postponed The Waynesville Music Club will meet on Friday, March 25, in stead of March 21, as previously scheduled.
