Dr. Benjamin Swalin di rected the performances. The Bizet Synwhonv in C Maior was the main work played for the evening concert and excerpts from au four movements were played in the afternoon1. The evening concert also featur ed. Miss Josephine Cunningham of Asheville, who sang a group of three songs, "Alleluia,"' by Mozart; "Lo. Hear the Gentle Lark," by Bishop; and "The Queen of Night" an aria from The Magic Flute. Her encore number was "Danny Boy, accompanied by Mrs. Swalin with the celesta. Encores by the orchestra were "Ave Maria,' and "Deep Purple," first and second choices made by high school students. Other numbers included "Sleich Ride," by Anderson; "None But The Lonely Heart," by Tschaikow sky; and, "Turkey in the Straw." Ushers were Betty Barber, Ann Williamson Prevost, Adora Lea Prevost, Florence Ann Bowles, and Agnes Jane Roberson. V Immediately after the concert the local Symphony Committee en tertained at a reception given at The Lodge in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Swalin. Guests included Miss Cunning ham and her instructor, Mrs. Kemp, and Mr. Kemp of Asheville and a- round forty patrons of the symph ony. Refreshments were served from a bouffet table and arrangements of spring flowers were used in de corating. Mrs. Frieda Knopf is chairman of the symphony committee with Mrs. Jonathan Woody as her as sistant. The committee members are Mrs. Aaron Prevost, Mrs. L. K. Barber, Mrs. M. H. Bowles, Mrs. L. M. Mrs. W. V. Davis, president, pre sided and the morning devotional was given by Mrs., J. C. Haney, Mrs. Bertha Davis, and Mrs. Sam Green. . The afternoon program included a review of "BurledLiving," giv en by Mrs. Furman Noland, Mrs. Charles Noland, and Mrs. Way Messer. Luncheon was served at noon by the hostess. Those attending the meeting in cluded Miss Manilla Brown, Mrs. Lawrence Brown, and Mrs! Car lyle Davis, new members of the Society and the following addition al members; Mrs. Cora Hipps, Mrs. Bertha Davis, Mrs. Furman Noland, Mrs. Monroe Noland, Mrs. W. V. Recreation -----Leaders Elected Nineteen members of the Iron Duff community 4-H Club last night discussed plans for making individual scrapbooks and elected recreation leaders. Frank Chambers was named re creation chairman, and Helen Fer guson and Claudia Sue Crawford were selected as his assistants dur ing the meeting, which was held at the Antloch Baptist Church. Aiding with the meeting were Ray Milner and Mrs. Oral Yates. . After the session opened, Miss Crawford offered the devotion, and Mattie Sue Medford led the group in the singing of several selections. Joe Caldwell, the club president, was in charee of the meeting. It was announced that, at the next session, the members would be signed to four sub groups to compate in an attendance contest. McCRACKEN of Fines Creek cele brated their fiftieth wedding anniversary last month. They were married on February 21, 1900. Both Mr. and Mrs. McCracken are natives of Haywood County. Mrs. McCracken is the former Miss Delia Green. Ninevah, Francis Cove Women Organize Friendship Club By Mrs. Bill Hollingsworth Mountaineer Correspondent The women of the Ninevah sec tion and Francis Cove community organized a Friendship Club. In a recent meeting at the home of Mrs. Richard Inman, Jr., they set up their new organization and elected; Mrs, Bill Hollingsworlh, presi dent; Mrs. Inrnin, vice-president; and Mrs, Carl Hightower, secre tary and treasurer. Twelve members were enrolled at that first meeting, and five more have joined since. On the Club roster now in addi tion to the officers are Edna Press ley, Frieda Mae Inman, Mrs. John Foster, Helen Crawford, Jessie Inman, Annie Bell Caldwell, Hilda Hollingsworth, Thelma Radford, Pearl Smiley, Gladys Smiley, Lu cille Franklin, Myrtle Hightower, Mary Ruth McCracken; Lois Fer guson, Helen Troutman, Doris Bishop, and Nan Freeman. ; Anyone who would like to join the dub is sincerely invited to at tend our next meeting, which will be held at the home of Mrs. Annie Bell Caldwell in Ninevah. Girl Scouts Will Celebrate 38th Birthday Girl Scouts of the Hazelwood- Waynesville area will join more than a million American girls from coast to coast in celebration of the 38th birthday ' of Girl Scouting, March 12-18. The birthday will be observed with special activities in various troops. On this Saturday morning a fifteen-minute skit, "It's Fun to Grow Up," will be broadcast over Station WHCC by members o f Senior Troop No. 6, under the di rection of Mrs. Rufus Pennell. The program will begin at 9:15 a. m. and the cast will include Joan Rat cliffe, Shirley Mae Connatser, and Catherine Bell. On Sunday morning, members of the two senior troops, four inter mediate troops, and five Brownie troops;-' which " comprise the" Girl Scout Council, will attend the elev en o'clock service at the First Bap tist Church and will sit in a body with their leaders and members of the Council. The goal of the organization as it celebrates its 38th birthday is Better Scouting For More Girls. It is a goal that cannot be attained without more leaders, and for that reason the local council is . again appealing for volunteer workers. Since the first troop was formed back in 1912, the Girl Scouts have never had to recruit members, but there Is always a need for leaders. Crabtree Y.W.A. To Hold Meeting The Young Woman's Auxiliary of the Crabtree Baptist church will meet at the home , of Miss Roxle Presnel, Saturday, March 11 at 2 p. m. Important matters will be dis cussed at the meeting and all mem bers are asked to attend.
