Micah Gives Hope of Salvation PROMISES PEACE AND PROSPERITY FOR ISRAEL Scripture Micah 4 By NEWMAN CAMPBELL THE WHOLE book of Micah is given us for a lesson today as it was last week. We concentrate especially, today, however, on the promises Jehovah made through Micah to His people if they would return to Him as their God and do Hia will. If is thought Micah prophesied around 725 B. C. The city of Je rusalem is still in existence, and rften referred to in . the daily newspapers and radio newscasts. The prophecy made more than 2,500 years ago, however, still is not fulfilled. It is a Holy City to Christians because it was the place where Jesus walked, healed and taught, and of his trials and condemna tion. To the Jewish people it is David's city, where David's son, Solomon, built the great temple, and the center of their worship. There is talk that it may be made an international city. What was the prophecy? In Mi cah's words: "But in the latter days (mean--ing the end of the seel it shall come to pass, that the mountain 1-5; 5:2-4; 1:18-30. .Children and older folk may ba moved by the music of these words of the poet, spoken so long ago and addressed to the dis tressed people of Israel. The picture that it gives us of a peaceful scene where no man was likely to be called to go to battle, but all the implements of war were made into instruments of peace to serve man instead of killing him, can be subject of talk and suggestions for the younger children, and discussions among the older class members. Even atomic energy can be used for the benefit, instead of the de struction, of mankind and civili zation, ; Then comes the Messianic pro phecy that runs through so many books of the Old Testament Tho Christ shall come out of Judah Jesus' own tribe. "Out of Beth lehem shall one come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from old, from everlasting." After He came, "then the res idue of His brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. "And He shall stand and feed Bethel Presbyterian Church The Rev, Paul Patterson Thrower, Minister Sunday School 10:00 a.m. Except on 4th Sunday. Morning Worship 11:00 a.m., on second Sunday. 10:00 a.m., on fourth Sunday Women of the Church: 2:00 p.m. First Friday of month. This being the 4th Sunday Morn ing Worship will be at 10:00 a.m., followed by the Sunday School at 11:00 a.m. The pastor's subject will be, "The Country Church". MEMORY jVERSE "God will teach us His ways, and ioe will walk in Sis paths." Micah i:t m of Jehovah's house shall be estab ... lished on the top of the moun- tains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and peoples shall flow up unto it. "And many nations shall go 3 and say, Come ye, and let us go wi up to the mountain of Jehovah, and to the house of the God of J Jacob; and He will teach us of M His ways, and we will walk in t His paths. For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of 2 Jehovah to Jerusalem; "And He will judge between h many peoples, and will decide concerning strong nations afar off : and they shall bea their swords into plowshares, and their spears Into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against m nation, neither shall they learn irwar any mtfcre. f "But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig-tree, and none shall make them . afraid; for the mouth of Jehovah of Hosts hath spoken it." The. dream of peace on earth never dies. .It is as old as man .himself. His flock in the strength of Je hovah, in the majesty of the name of Jehovah His God: and they shall abide; for how shall He be great unto the ends of the earth." Bethlehem was the birthplace of David, the only king of Israel to be born there. There the new king should be born not in Je rusalem, the city of David. It pre supposes that the family of David had fallen into poverty. The last reference In our lesson is a song of praise to our God: "Who is a God like unto Thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and pass eth over the transgression of the remnant of His heritage? He re taineth not His anger for ever, be cause He delighteth in loving kindness. . "He will again have compassion upon us; He will tread our iniqui-' ties under foot; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea." God loves His children, and for gives our sins if we are truly re pentant and turn to Him, the pro- Bethel Methodist Church The Rev. Clyde L.
