Ferre, widely-known theologian, lecturer dnd authorwho is the current plat form speaker at the Methodist As sembly, Tea will be served at the Assembly book store, t A native of Sweden and an or dained minister of the Congrega tional Church, Dr. Ferre is profes sor of philosophical theology at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, tenn. He will sail for England in September to lecture a year at Ox fjord University on a Fulbright fel lowship. Dr, Ferre is the author of seven books, on religious subjects, includ ing "Strengthening Spiritual Life," just off the press. He will return IV Coining Soon "Lullaby Of Broadway" Ruth and Latrobe Carroll, writ ers and illustrators of children's books, will give an illustrated book talk at the Strand Theatre tomor row morning at 11 o'clock. The program ,by the husband-and-wife team has been planned especially for members of the Cherokee Indian Reading Club of the Haywood County Library, but everyone is" inivted. The Carrols will bring all sorts of exhibits, including a model of the "flying house" featured in one of their books, A procession used as a model in another book, "Pet Tale,'' comprises a farmer in his car, towing a horse, a donkey, a lamb, a pig, a dog, a rabbit, and a mouse with six baby mice all in trailers. . Mr. Carroll will speak and Mrs. Carroll will sketch what he de scribes. They will be introduced by Miss Margaret Johnston, librar ian.. : The program will be repeated at 2:30 p. m. tomorrow at the Clyde Baptist Church. No admission will be charged for either event. Following the program at the Strand, autographed copies of books by the Carrolls will be avail able at the Library. Duval of Waynes ville. He is aboard the landing ship, tank, USS 840, which is operating with the amphibious forces in Ko rean waters. Recommlssioned from the "Mothball Fleet" at Astoria, Ore., last November, the 840 has been in action in Korea since May. STEPHEN McNALLY "AIR CADET" Phone 73S This week's program at . the Methodist Assembly grounds will continue to feature missionary em phasis with a South-wide School of Missions continuing through Thurs day noon, and a Missionary Confer ence opening Thursday night. The school, attended by 250 dele gates of the Woman's Society of Christian Service 'in nine states and Cuba, includes missionary and Biblical studies in the morning, af ternoon workshops, and the 8 p.m. lectures of Dr. Nels F. S. Ferre on "Christianity Today". Bishop Ralph Ward, who spent 40 years as a missionary to China until ousted last year by the Com munist government, will give the opening address of the Missionary Conference at 8 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium. He will speak on "China and Communism". Two platform addresses will fea ture Friday's program. At 11 a.m. Dr. James K. Mathews, secretary of the foreign division, Methodist Board of Missions, New York, will talk on "India Land of Mystery," where he formerly served as a mis sionary. Evangelist Billy Graham will address the conference at 8 p.m. on "Evangelism and Christian Missions". The largest crowd of the season is expected that night. Saturday's program will empha size "the Rural Church and Com munity," directed by the Rev. James W. Sells, Atlanta, Ga., ex tension secretary of the church's Southeastern Jurisdiction, Dr. Hugh Hammond Bennett of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Washington, u. u., will speak on "The Land and the People", Speakers to appear later will in clude Bishop Arthur J. Moore, At lanta; Dr. Mason Crum of Duke University; Dr. J. A. Engle of the Methodist Board of Missions and Church Extension. New York; Dr. David Seamands missionary to In dla; the Rev. Victor Rankin and Mrs. Rankin, misisonaries to Cuba and the Rev. Fred Manget, mission ary to China. A youth rally will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, led by the Rev, John Branscomb of Orlando, Fla., and the Rev. Walter Gum, Richmond, Va., president and secretary, re spectively, of the Southeastern Jurisdiction Board of Missions and Church Extension, i The seven-day conference will be directed by Dr. William F.' Qull lian of Atlanta, executive secretary of the Southeastern Jurisdictional Council. Meanwhile, a South-wide youth leadership conterence will open Wednesday and continue through July .29. Sessions will be held at Shackford Hall under the direction of the Rev. Larry Eisenberg, staff member of the Methodist General Board of Education, Nashville, Tenn.
