The three Waynesville aldermen ?running on their record of an expenditure pf $430,000 in per manent improvements, and without an increase in taxes, swept back into office, along with their mayor. Henry Miller led the Waynes ville ticket with 1,174, followed by Gaddy, 915, and Liner, 706, for re-election. In Hazelwood, Carl Swanger, a former alderman with 8 years ex perience led the ticket with 403, while John V. Blalock, incumbent, polled 363 and Grady Smith, a former alderman with 12 years experience received 345. In the Clyde race for alderman, Lester Ward, a newcomer to Clyde politics, led the ticket with 168 for alderman, replacing Bruce Sel lers on the board. Incumbents re elected were J. W. Morgan and Cecil Spencer. Logan M. White, a new candi date in Canton, led the ticket with 974, followed by _ incumbents Charles M. Beall (and C. F. Stanley for re-election. Rep. Rogers said the committee report was favorable, and he predicted the bill would have smooth sailing on the floor of the House. "The proposed tobacco tax is dead," Rep. Rogers said. The pro posal was to put a tax of two cents a package on cigarettes in order to raise about $8,500,000. j Eastern Carolina farmers have been fighting the measure continu ously ever since it was proposed by Governor Hodges in January. "We are hearing a lot right now about increasing the sales tax from three per cent to three-and a-third or to three-and-a-half per ctpit," Rep. Rogers said this morn ing. Last night Rep. Rogers, together with Secertary of State TTiad Eurc appeared in WUNC-TV with a pro gram designed to create interest in the Ramp Convention Sunday. 'The program went over big, and i Raleigh has about 30 bushels of ramps. There are 20 bushels at the | S & W Cafeteria, which they plan to feature on their menu today and Friday." Rep. Rogers said his plans for comi/ig home this weekend de pended upon the schedule being worked out for the General Assem bly. Right now there is pending a plan for an early Monday morning session. According to Cpl Smith, Sorrells related that Miss Putnam had urg- j ed Leatherwood to slow down as the car approached Clyde, but said the latter paid no head to her re quest. Patrolman V. E. Bryson said that he was on the old highway near the j western town limits of Canton when he observed a 1949 Chevrolet convertible heading toward Clyde at a high rate of speed. He attempted to locate the car, but the Clyde collision took place before he arrived in the town. According to a report, Mr. Gid-, ney went to Clyde to see Dr. A. C. Downs, optometrist, about getting new glasses. Leatherwood's car caught Are after the collision. Clyde firemen responded to an alarm and extin guished the blaze. The car was owned by the youth's mother, Mrs. Carrie Cunningham. Leatherwood will be given a hearing before Police Judge Larry Cagle at Clyde after he is released from the Hospital. Funeral services for Gidney will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday in the First Methodist Church in Canton. The Rev. I. L. Roberts will offi ciate, and burial will be in Bon-A Venture Cemeterv. Pallbearers will be Harley Stiles, Harney Anderson, Halmond Cook, Canoll Warren, Edward Pless and Woodrow Robertson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Men's Sunday School Class of the First Methodist Church. Flower bearers will be members of the church's Woman's Society of Christian Service. The body will lie in state an hour prior to the services. It was taken to the home Wednesday afternoon. Surviving are the wife, Mrs. Margaret Davis Gidttey; three daughters, Mrs. Dorothy June Wells of Canton, Mrs. Frances Hannah of Raleigh, and Miss Mar garet Ann Gidncy of Canton; a son, Charles, Jr., of Canton; the mother, Mrs. W. L. Gidney of Asheville; two sisters, Mrs. A. B. Ensley of Asheville, and Mrs. Harry Steele of Washington, D. C.; two brothers, Dewey of Asheville, and L. H. of Johnson City, Tenn.; two grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Cpl. Smith said Gidney's death was the first in Haywood County from a traffic accident since last August.
