The crowd was so numerous that they could not bring him near the Lord, so they took him up on the housetop and let him down through the tiling with his couch. The teacher here should, if possible, tell the children how the houses of Israel were built so that they could understand how this was done. When Jesus saw the man He said, "Man, thy sins are forgiven thee." The Pharisees were angered at this, thinking, "Who is this which speaketh blasphemies: Who can forgive sins, but God alone?" Jesus knew what they were thinking, and He said, "What reason ye in your hearts, whether it would be easier to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say. Rise up and walk," and to the man He said, Arise,, and take up thy couch, and go into thy house," and the man did so. One day Jerfus saw a publican named Levi?Matthew?who was also an outcast from the rest of the Jews because he worked for the Roman government. Jesus called upon him to follow Him, and he did. The scribes and Phar isees murmured against Him be cause he was eating with sinners. But Jesus rebuked them by say ing: "They that are whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. I came not to call the right eous, but sinners to repentance." Then they found fault with Jesus saying that He and His dis ciples did not fast according to the law. To that Christ replied that the children of the bride chamber would not be likely to fast while the bridegroom was with them, but when the bride groom had gone from them, was the time to fast. He was here re ferring to Himself as the bride groom, and suggesting that He would not be with them always prophesying His death on the Cross. If the teacher has time, the epi sode of the walk through the held on the Sabbath can be mentioned, and the miracle of the man with the withered hand who was healed in the synagogue on the Sabbath ?further infuriating the Phari - sees. This young fellow is having fun building a skyscraper tower; Most any minute now he'll reach its peak, blocks will come tumbling down with a delightful clatter, and he'll laughingly pick them up and begin all over again. . That's the fun of being a child. But when you're grown-up and things come clattering down, it's not so funny. Sometimes they're physical and material?a fence or a trellis that isn't quite right, or the paint you brushed on so carefully peels and flakes. So you go to an expert?a carpenter or a painter?for advice. Then again perhaps something goes awry with your inner life. Perhaps you feel you've made an awful mess of things. This tragedy too can be averted if you seek expert guidance. By going to Church regularly you will find the know-how to build within yourself a life secure and unshakeable. Millions of men throughout the ages have found the Church a source of strength and stability; why shouldn't you? ?s k ~ i THE CHURCH FOR ALL . . .
