Baucom, superintendent of the Weights and Measures division of the State De partment of Agriculture, has warned North Carolina merchants to be on the alert in the purchase of used scales now being sent in to this State for resale. 260 of these scales have been tested and less than four percent 1 were found to be in "workable" condition. I Of the 260 scales examined, 150 were found in Goldsboro, 10 in Raleigh, and 100 In Charlotte. Baucom said his inspectors are now "on the trail" of others which have been shipped into the State in recent weeks. Superintendent Baucom polled to the need for additional scales in North Carolina, but pointed out that "we cannot accept scales which were condemned elsewhere." "Any person purchasing scales from anyone other than a legiti mate scale dealer should make certain they are in good condition. He explained that the Scale Me chanic Act was set up to protect against the practices of unscrup ulous, incompetent, and fraudu lent "self-named" scale mechanics. He said the law forbids the sale or moving of any condemned scale until it has been put in a satisfactory weighing condition.
