The move came following a two hour -conference between Agricul ture Secretary C. F. Brannan and potato growers, Congressmen, and agriculturalists from North Caroli na, New Jersey and Virginia. Rep. Graham A. Barden, of New Bern, was chosen to direct the case for 1 he potato growers. At the end of the conference, Ml. Barden reported he believed Secre tary Brannan had been favorably impressed by the case put forward, and expressed hope that the meet ing would bring some relief to east ern potato growers hard-hit by the government program. Both Rep. Bonner and Barden said they had been promised by Ralph S. Trigg, Deputy Administrator of the Pro duction and Marketing Administra tion in the Agriculture Department, that an answer would be drawn up to the case presented by the East Coast growers. The argument was over tne for mula on which the potato price sup port program is based. The De partment has announced a reduc tion of potato price support from 90 percent to 60 percent of parity. At the same time it announced an acreage quota system for potatoes based on the number of acre:, planted in each of the states during the period 1943 to 1948. Barden called the basis of the program a "trick formula" and said "we are tired of having such a for mula thrown at us every time we turn our backs." He said the for mula seemed set up to serve the West Coast potato growers, and pointed 'out that the potato crop was being shifted from East to West as a result of the Department's price support program. In setting forth the demands of,-the East Coast growers, Barden made, three requests.' First, that the Department choose a perman ent base period on which to set up the price-support formula. He ar iued the present base period, 1943 to 1948, favored the West Coaj crops and suggested a longer per iod, from 1937 to 1948. Second, he asked for an "across the board" reduction in acreage uniform in all states. The present formula, he charged, appears to be stacked to favor certain states i mainly California. I J Tiird, he asked for a Uniform I , set 6 support prices for all grow- i ers. In .this regard, too, he said i western gl owers were favored by j , the present program. i Heath Funeral Held i Mrs. Fannie Beaver Heath 79 ' wife of the late Ivev O.
