It Is twice unfortunate that Jesus' meaning has been hid 'den under ' an even more forbid ding word, -Beatitudes." What we have here is a series of one-sentence pictures of truly happy per sons. What Christians Are " In these sentences Jesus sketches the kind of person who "has," that is to say, belongs to, the Kingdom of Heaven. If God were forced to throw away some of the human race and keep others, these are the people he would keep. Jesus in these short sentences is pictur ing the Christ-like; He is not talk ing about what they believe but about what they are. There is all the difference in the world between Jesus' idea of a Christian and some of the popular ideas today. For example, many persons think of a Christian as a person who keeps a certain number of rules, or believes a certain number of things, or" belongs to a peculiar kind of club called the church. But a club member may be exactly like the people on the outside ex cept that he has paid his dues and they haven't; and some church members are just like non-church members except that they have paid their dues (or at least owe them) while the' outsiders have not. GODVIIIS' SOIIS finding True flapplness Let us venture to put the mean ing it Jesus into simple words of today. The following sentences are meant to suggest only some of the means wrapped in these truths-forme. . . Do you want to know the secret of happiness? Jesus asks. I will tell you. The happy are those who know how little they know and how far. from good they are. These are the real people, God's people. The happy are not always the gay; the happy are the seri ous, those who feel a sincere sor row for their sins and shortcom ings, sorry enough to turn away from them. The happy are those who do not insist on their own rights, who carry no chip on their shoulders, who are more interested in justice tor others than for them selves. After the proud bave de stroyed the proud, thesa are the people to whom the earth belongs. The happy people are those who want to be good more than -anything else in the world. This is the one desire that God always fulfils. Happy people are those that find their happiness in helping others; these are the people who-will find helpers in their own time of heed. Happy people are those who are pure, not in act alone but in Inner thoughts and desires. They are the . ones who have any eyes for God. Happy people are not only peace able themselves but help others to live in peace as well. These are the people' who are really God-like, Happy people are not always free from, trouble; but their troubles have .been caused chiefly not by their sins but by the fact that they are good. They have their heaven in their hearts. ; ' -."' 'i'-..:,.j', Christians Are Different ; You are happy yourselves (Jesus concludes) when the hard things said about you are lies. You' are happy when you suffer as I suffer, ,on behalf of others. God will reward you; ' you belong to .the glorious company of the best' men of all time, for .there never was a good friend of God who was not misunderstood and slandered. Jesus never explained all he ' meant. ("He who has ears,, let him hear," be used to say.) But What- r ever may be puzzling, one thing is clear;. Christians are different. If a man fits these descriptions ever part-way, he is noticeably different from the run-of-mlne human be ing. We cannot water down Jesus' ideas,' for they are really radicals- We should not try' to make it sound easy; he did not. But let us be as frank as he wasr If you want to find Aal happiness. C HERMAN TRUEBLOOD Text: Ye have omitted the weUrhttet- matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith,' Matt 23:23. Countless failures and heart aches ere due to mis-placed emphasis the magnification of little insignificant things above the really big things. 'Majoring on Minors' is bad anytime, any where; but it is a cruel travesty an reel religion when religious leaders devote their best efforts to 'Making Mountains of Im portance out of Mole Hills of Triviality,' while ignoring the fund amental things of the spirit. Jesus was considerate about sins of the flesh, but He was merciless in condemning sins of the' intellect. With indigination He castigated the scribes land Pharisees for this hypocritical conduct, and for magnifying a rigmarole of meaningless forms in place of a religion of the heart (Read the story in Matthew 23rd Chapter), and note the bold language Christ used in denoun cing these unworthy intolerant religious bigots; said He: 'Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! Blind guides White sepulchres full of dead men's bones! Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how cam ye escape the damnation of hell? -Outwardly righteous, birt within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity!' Jesus sternly rebuked these super-egotists for their Know-All attitude and their insatiable thirst for honorary recog nition 'They love the chief seats in the synagogue, and to be called of men. Rabbi. Rabbi,' (sticklers for high-sounding titles!). 'Woe unto you,' continued Jesus, 'for ye compass sea and land to mrke (Politicize and Propandize) one proselyte ye pay tithe of mlt and of anise and cumin, and HAVE OMITTED THE WEIGHTIER MATTERS of the Law, amd Judgement, and Mercy, and Faith.' Ob serve these Weightier Matters.' 1. LAW. Jesus came to 'fulfill Old Testament Law,' by the in auguration of the spiritual laws of the New Testament, exemplified in His life, teachings, and sacrificial death. Jesus revealed how that we may 'have life more abundantly' Life beautiful, wholesome, helpful; but the scribes end Pharisees would have no law except the cold heartless law of formality. 2. JUDGEMENT. Sincerity, honesty, impartial justice, and fair-mindedness in human relationships, is what Jesus must have meant when He included 'Judgment' as one of the virtues among the 'Weightier Matters' which the scribes arid Pharisees had 'Omitted' from their religious practices. The' spirit of the Golden Rule was foreign to them. 3. MERCY. These 'Hard Boiled' scribes and Pharisees were untouched by the heart longings, as well as the bodily ills, of suf fering humanity. Such humane and Christian traits as mercy, charity, and compassion, was 'Omitted' from their ecclesiastical standards and catalogue of religious performances. Their braz en conceit, and pride of learning and position, out weighed all else.' 'AH their works they do for to toe seen of men,' said Jesus. METHODIST CHURCHES WALLACE GROUP K. R. FAITH: Thou blind Pharisees,' exhorted the Lord, 'cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter, that the outside then may be clean also?' This bunch of 'high brow learned doc tors of theology had about as much warmth of heart as a hunk of Ice. Merely decorating the outside of mfan with ancient Phari saical white wash, or beautifying his external appearance with up to date modernistic religious lotions, minus the repentance of 6ins, and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, will not change his spiritual sta tus as a condemned and lost sinner.
