Eor exam ple, Tt is widely believed that practically all animals which go to market are heavy con sumers of grain which could otherwise be used for human consumption. The fact is that ryo per cent of all meat;of all kinds pro-, duced in the United States is grown without, the feedings of any grain at all. In the case of cattle, more than So per' cent of the beef produced is fed no grain. These"ahirrials are raised on roughage, grass, beet pulp and a large number of other foods fybt Hi^ttlble for human Consumption; On top! of that, two-thirds of the area of the United States is in grass which would be wasted if there were no animals to con sume it and convert it into meat. Lastly, when grain, is Ted, it is mostly corn, a stand ard animal feed, rather, than that which is consumed large ly by people. It is evjdent that the grain problem cannot be properly solved by such extreme meas ures as the proposal to reduce our meat animal population. effect on our standard's of nu trition—effects which would be carried on into succeeding generations. It would reduce the fertility of the soil. It would be a blow to the farmer who receives more cash in come from meat than from any other crop. It would re duce the supply of .the many by-products which come from meat animals—and some of them, like insulin, are vital to the public health.
