Originally used extensively in European countries where humid conditions present serious moislture problems, this method has become popular in this climate because it presents an economical way to safeguard against fire, termites and deterioration. Engineers elaijn that the , air space between the brick provides superior insulation and at the same time guards against any pos sible water penetration that may come through the mortar joints or due to faulty construction. They maintain that this means a saving on insulation and on furring (cavi ty walls may be plastered direct) which saves most if not all the extra cost of the brick work.
