C., THURSDAY, MAY 4, 1961 24 PAGES THE MOTHER'S DAY COM mittee of the Chapel Hill-Carr boro Merchants Association Trade Promotions Committee has decid ed to donate new 50-star Ameri can flags to each of Chapel Hill’s seven public schools instead of staging its annual Mother-of-the Year promotion this year. The presentation will be made by pro motion Chairman Joe Robbins and Association President Joe Augustine. A THREE-YEAR STUDY OF child development will be made on pupils in the Efland and Ef land-Cheeks School by the Uni versity Department of Psychol ogy beginning next fall. "To be carried out with the aid of ^ federal grant, the project may be extended five more years after the initial three. It’s to be done through a federal grant for this purpose to the Department. There will be'~both a full-time and a part-time psychologist working at the two schools. QUESTION ASKED CHAPEL Hill Fire Chief J. S. Melvin Whitfield, a school com mitteeman, said the vote at a meeting last week was 44-12 to this effect. The school board went ahe^d, however, and voted to close the school anyway as part of their planned consolidation program. MORE SWEARING WAS IN order for three members of the county Board of Education Mon day. As result of amendments to the School Omnibus bill, the terms of C. M. Walker Jr. and C. W. 'Stanford were increased to six years from four and Delmar Brown was appointed for a term of four years. He had been left out of the previous bill- All three took new oaths in the office of Clerk E. M. Lynch. A NEW KIND OF LOCAL elections board met for the first time officially in Chapel Hill at noon yesterday. It was the Board of Canvassers, provided for un der the Town’s newly-adopted municipal charter and consisting of th£ registrar or a judge from each of the five precincts.
